Smoking is the negative habit which can be caused by different reasons and can lead to undesirable and harmful consequences connected with person’s physical and/or psychological health problems. In most cases, psychological factors trigger people to start smoking. These factors can include such everyday issues as anxiety, malice, dissatisfaction with own life, depression and difficult problems which seem to be unsolvable. People, who have all above-mentioned troubles, try to escape from all vital pressures in tobacco and cigarettes. A desire to smoke in difficult situations is easy to explain. The main component of tobacco is nicotine which is able to give the feeling of short-termed enjoyment, when a dose of nicotine reaches the brain, causes the mood rise and betters the concentration abilities (“Smoking and Mental Health”). The very first inhaling is not always called by psychological factors, but by the negative examples of people who surround the future smoker. Often, smokers wrongly believe that cigarettes can better their problems; but nicotine is only substance which provokes withdrawal effect (“Smoking and Mental Health”).
The negative effect of tobacco can be observed not only among the nearest environment, but also in the workplace among coworkers and colleagues. The first factor that suffers from smoking in the work place is the productivity of working procedure. Smokers possess the tendency for poorer health rate in comparison with nonsmokers. This fact makes smokers to take more sick-lists and as a result to be absent in the workplace much more than colleagues who don’t have such pernicious habit (“Employee Assistance Programs”).
The second negative factor of smoking in the workplace is secondhand smoking for coworkers who breathe in the toxic nicotine miasma, which is even more dangerous than the direct smoking. The second hand smoking can trigger off such severe illness as lung cancer.
The overwhelming majority of companies, which have EAP’s, hire mental health specialists in order to help its employees to understand the origin of personal problems (“Employee Assistance Programs”). EAP’s can also cope with smoking habit organizing seminars, when workers can discuss the problem in the group and find the common ways of solving this habit. Also, EAP’s can provide health education course which will inform employees about the negative influence of smoking in order to make them ponder over reasons which have led them to smoking. The presence of EAP’s in companies and other workplaces is very useful advantage for employees.
Smoking tobacco is closely linked with the condition of person’s mental health. Smokers believe that such mental states as stress, depression and anxiety, can be eased or fully removed with the help of smoking cigarettes or tobacco. Attempts to use smoking in order to remove the above-mentioned disorders can be called self-medication which doesn’t solve a problem, but even aggravates the whole situation (“Smoking and Mental Health”).
People should remember, smoking is not the initiative for solving personal problems. The process of smoking brings only the short-termed pleasure, and nicotine causes the dependence which can ruin health of person and provoke illnesses such as lung cancer and those ones connected with respiratory tracts.
