It is true that people experience changes in their lives as they grow older (Gordon, Dan, & Page 73). As a young boy, reading and writing were a great challenge to me. I was in constant collision with my teachers over poor reading and writing abilities. My poor reading and writing skills almost brought an end to my learning as it made me hate education. I was the subject of ridicule and embarrassment in reading and writing sessions. I had to try extra hard to improve my reading and writing abilities in order to continue with my education. My older self in relation to reading and writing is quite different to my new self. This paper explains how I transformed from the worse in writing to the best writer.
During my early years of learning, I attracted the attention of all the teachers due to my poor reading and writing skills. I began to hate myself for it and even contemplated dropping out of school. Were it for my parents, I would have dropped out of school. The problem was more complicated since I never wanted to be helped. Since I was a shy person, I refused to share my predicaments with anyone else. However, I went through the despair knowing that one day I will definitely read and write well. I could not trace the source of my hope, but I was always hopeful for the better days to come.
My problem with reading and writing changed one day when our teacher spotted me in class and demanded that I write a story that he will present to the board of management. The teacher asserted that he wanted a good writer to handle the story so that the school board of management is convinced that we are bright students. I was amazed since I could not comprehend the full extent of his words. He came directly to me and handed me the topic to write and left. All my classmates were equally amazed and some even took it as ridicule. After all, I knew that I was not the best in class and I also questioned the sudden trust from my teacher. I stood up and went to the library and I began to write the story diligently. I never wanted to disappoint my teacher, so I decide to give the writing my best. The teacher gave me two hours to finish the writing then hand it over to her. I went and put all my energy and knowledge into the piece of the essay. When I handed in my paper, the teacher looked at it and nodded. I knew that I had done my best and would get proper recommendation. After the teacher finished analyzing the essay, he accepted in front of my class that it was the best essay he has ever seen from such a junior class. I was extremely delighted and felt happy for such a rarely compliment from a senior English teacher. I later came to learn that the teacher confused me with another clever boy in our class. He wanted the boy to write the story, but accidentally confused me with that boy since we resembled each other. What was more important now is that I have not disappointed. I knew that I could write properly as long as am determined and focused on writing. This incidence taught me an important lesson that everyone can overcome failure. Nobody was designed to fail, and everyone can succeed as long as they are determined. From this moment, I decided that I will always be the best in reading and writing. I began to practice immediately to protect and preserve the unexpected privileged position.
When the teacher brought the next writing competition, I knew that I had to defend my position no matter what. I knew that I had displaced some people in their position and were equally working very hard to unseat me from my temporarily held post. However, I was not ready to let it go without a fight. I was both physically and psychologically prepared to emerge the top in the writing competition. To another shock of everybody, I cemented my position as the best writer when the results were released. Everyone, including my English teacher, was amazed by the sudden giant that awoke in me. I finally got the confidence that was needed to push me forward. Thereafter, I was always the best in writing.
Currently, I enjoy reading and writing so much. I have established a reputation as a professional writer. I have read several books from different genres. I’m still reading more and will continue for the better part of my life. In addition, I have published several books that are helping other students to improve their reading and writing skills. I’m a respected professional writer with much reputation in the literary world. What interest me most is that the initiative I began as a junior student saw me rise from a young person to the professional I am today. The interest I developed in reading has led me to choose my career as English teacher, a profession I enjoy to the fullest. I encourage my students that they can become whatever they want to be as long as they are determined to achieve it. I always tell them my story and have seen most of them transform to become the best in their classes. Enjoy each and every moment of my profession and I’m still determined to take it to the next level.
In conclusion, old life is quite different with my current life, especially when it comes to reading and writing. During my junior school life, I used to be considered a dwarf due to my poor reading and writing skills. However, all this changed by coincidence when the teacher confused me for another boy and appreciated my writing abilities. Paradoxically, I proved to my teacher that day that I’m the best in writing. Until today, I’m still proving to the whole world that my teacher was not wrong since I’m still one of the best writers in the world. My life changed totally, and I’m now enjoying what I used to hate the most, reading and writing. Today, am totally convinced that great achievements begin with self-determination.
