When considering the American literary periods, it is imperative to understand that this designation typically represents a distinct era in the American literature which is comprised of various thematic and stylistic characteristics. Some of the most notable eras in the literature field are the naturalism in 19th century, modernism and post-war in the 20th century. In all these eras, there are themes in literature that were particularly prominent in these periods, some of these themes such as slavery have been largely rendered obsolete in the modern 21st century literature. Nonetheless, the literary theme that I consider to have stood the test of time since the early eras is the theme of love.
Since the Victorian literature period, the theme of love is still one of the most relevant themes in literature. Love is among the most relevant themes that still appeal to the 21st reader. Whether in poems and novels or any other form of literature, this themes continues to remain prominent, and will definitely continue to be despite changes in times and great advancement in the literary world. Despite the sharp rise in themes such as terrorism, which were not in the previous eras forms of literature, the theme of love has somehow managed to remain unchanged.
Conclusively, the most basic explanation as to why the theme of love is still a central theme even in our modern literature is simply because love is the bond that keeps people, societies and nations together. Furthermore, the theme of love is extremely expansive. It can be about a theme of romantic love, friendship or platonic love. One of the most popular example of literature that focused on love is definitely Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.
