Engineering students sometimes do not give writing and reading the necessary time; it needs to master itthem. They have thisthe idea ifthat since they are engineers, they do not have to write a perfect essay or write in general.at all because they have focused much on math and other technical subjects. I too thought I only need to focus on math and other science subjects because, they will be more important in my future job. However, engineering jobs and different types of jobs have different reading and writing mattersthat matter. In thean interview I had with Abdullah Basulaiman, we discussed those four subjects begging with clear writing, reading, communication, and jobs after graduating. The interview highlighted the various types of writing in engineering, the importance of writing, and an overview of the engineering profession outside the college in the real working environment.
Clear writing will lead to positive impressions, helping engineers to stand out in their field. So of specialization. Therefore, I interviewed my friend Abdullah Basulaiman, who ishas been an electrical engineersengineer for 10ten years. Also, and I thought he could offer me great insights on the same topic having been in the field for long. Besides, He havehas been working with different companies infor the past 9nine years and, continued his post graduate postgraduate studies while he was working. SoTherefore, I asked him this question “was there any kind, “What type of writing and readingdid you do in post-graduate work as opposed to working in your job?”.?” He started by explaining the different types of writing he havehad done in his career ranging from official reports, weekly reports, daily reports, and presentations.
Starting fromwith the official report, there waswere some companies who didn’tdid not provide him with templates and others who did. ButHowever, the weekly and daily reports were always passed on templates. After that, we havetalked about the presentations. There areHe did two kindkinds of presentation he didpresentations. First, he explained the yearly presentations, which he used to give onat the beggingbeginning of every year to explainlay out the formal plan of this year. The second kind is, the project funding presentations, which he usually give itgives when he thinkthinks of a better way to do a project or to start a project. After that, we startingstarted to discuss what type of reading he did?.. From the prospectiveperspective of his job, he didn’tdid not have much of reading to do exceptother than the reading that came from the technicians that worked with him, such as the weekly reports, progress reports, and plans.
Furthermore, this led me to the question about communications so, I asked him if the environment between him and the technicians is a friendly environment or a formal communication environment composed just by the emails or reports. According to Abdullah, he usually useuses the friendly way because, he wants to get to know what kind of people he workworks with. And and if there is a problem, he can easily identify where the problem came from. He wanted to maintain a friendly environment so that it could be easy for him to identify with the other technicians, and because he believed that they usually complimented each other in the jobs they do, and it would be very handy to have people who cooperate to carry out an assignment. However, he noted that there are some instances where the task demanded formal communications, especially when he was dealing with those higher or lower in rank and when asking for funding and giving reports to donors of some projects he had done.
Finally, He highlighted that there is usually a usual gap between gradatinggraduating from college and getting the job that you had wanted. It takes time and effort to find a good job. SoTherefore, I asked Abdullah “When you graduategraduated what type of jobs did you have?”.apply for and get?” He replied by saying “As an electrical engineers there waswere a lot of jobsjob opportunities because of the big needs inhuge demand for electrical engineers in Saudi Arabia”..” In Saudi Arabia, every engineering student is afraid of electrical engineering and they even callcalls it the cemetery for engineering student. Because, it’s so students. The reason behind this fear is because electrical engineering is hard comparingcompared to other engineering majors in Saudi Arabia. So, we.
We moved on to the next question when I asked him if there waswere things that you havehe had done in yourhis job that connected to what you havehe had studied?. It might lookseem like a silly question, but Ielectrical engineering graduate students have been told from electrical engineering graduate studentme that when thethey start working it was completely different thatto what they have been studying. ForHe gave an example: there was a girl of his friend; she had majored in electrical engineering, and when she startstarted working with NASA and, she saidtold him, “ I have been working in mechanical engineering for almost three months now even though I was an electrical engineering student” and many other examples..” The mismatch might arise due to the progressive nature of the industry, in that the engineering profession is highly dynamic, while what we study in college does not respond to the fast-paced changes in the profession.
