There is something small yet very significant which connects one single individual to the rest of the society, and this little thing could make all the difference between solitude and companionship. All of us belong somewhere, with our friends, with our family and sometimes even with strangers we barely have nodding acquaintances with.
This sense of belonging comes from a few characteristics of every group, and it draws its power from features that it shares with no other group. These features are what we could say form the culture of any distinct group and sociology often uses the word ‘subculture’ to describe this phenomenon.
Like every other person in my life, I also belong to a number of subcultures that become part of my surroundings. One of these subcultures is my belonging to the friends that I find myself gaming with most of the time. What brings us all together is our passion that we all share for the world that fascinates us the most; the world of the digital gaming.
We mostly gather at gaming zones and sometimes also meet at each other’s houses for our gaming sessions. Through our activity of gaming that we indulge in together, we come to know a number of things about one another which we may not normally be sharing with other age-fellows. We sometimes partner up in a common goal to win the game and in few occasions, we also find ourselves facing off against one another. Sometimes we tend to become aggressive in winning and on occasion, losing is also seen to spoil our moods.
A lot of times, we also find ourselves swinging our gaming remotes in synchronization and also sharing the intense part of our days in conversations with one another. We tease each other about crushes and about people that annoy us. Since we share insight into the more personal parts of our lives with one another, it brings us closer to friends, and I am sure that if I were to say goodbye to many of the people in my life, these would be the ones I will miss the most.
Another one of the subcultures that I share my sense of belonging is the activist group at the university. We are all rebels, and we don’t miss any opportunity to voice our opinions against the college rules that seem less than fair to us. We have a habit of meeting for weekly meetings and if any one of us hosts a party on campus, the rest of us are always there to join. We hang out together and sometimes we even have movie nights together. We even get into very earnest conversations with one another which on more than a few occasions also become very heated. Through this time, we calm each other down as well.
There have also been a few instances when one or more of us have also gotten in trouble with the school administration because of our activities on campus, but I like that we come together in times like those. We are all pretty close with one another, and we understand each other too. We are as close as one can be without sharing the personal aspects of our lives with one another.
With every subculture, we tend to explore a different side to our personalities and in these various environments; we are in roles that are unlike others. In some cultures, we grow as computer geeks, sometimes as rebels and on other occasions, it is the sensitive side of our personality that becomes stronger. All of these subcultures are essential to our growth and also for the healthy development of our personality.
