The rights of immigrants have been violated in many occasions in different countries all over the world. The immigrants are treated discriminatively in various aspects, such as minimum wage, working conditions, health polices, among others. The situations are worse in some countries than others. For example, numerous cases of immigrant mistreatment have been reported in the Middle East. Some go to the extent of killing the immigrants for flimsy reasons. There various way that can be adopted nationally and internationally to stop violation of human rights in the case of immigrants.
First, the international labour organization advocate fair working environment for all workers. The implementation of such policies is critical in stopping the abuse of immigrants. The international labour organization ought to come up with stringent measures and legislation that can help in stopping immigrant discrimination. If a country violates such measures to a specified limit, the country should face penalties that are preset in the measures. For example, the country can be sanctioned economically for gross violation of human rights.
According to the Berkeley law of the University of California, there are many incidents of forced labour. Many immigrants are forced to work in deplorable conditions through threats, violence, and without pay. Such occurrences indicate weak legislation within the countries themselves. From this perspective, countries need to strengthen existing laws on immigration and labour controls. For example, the State of California ought to ensure that no worker whether immigrant or not works in deplorable conditions and without pay. There is no human who is illegal (“American civil liberties union,” n.d.) Blackmail plays a critical role in encouraging forced labour where in the event that a resident comes to know of an illegal immigrant, they blackmail them to work for them free least they report to the police.
Some countries have somehow open laws that encourage massive immigrants into them. Due to the great influx of the immigrants, the citizens of the countries feel left out as the competition for available work slots and other economic activities increase. In many instances, citizens demand reduced or strict regulation of the type of work the immigrant can do. For this reason, most immigrants end up doing what is considered as the manual jobs in deplorable conditions. Whereas it is right for the government to protect the rights of the citizens, it is also the duty of the government to protect the rights of the immigrants too. From this premise, therefore, the government ought to protect the immigrants by ensuring that they get fair treatment within its bounders. In addition, it is prudent to stop the large influx of immigrants from entering the country other than dealing with them once within the country binderies. Therefore, laws ought to be put in place to ensure that there are limited numbers of annual immigrants into the country.
The international community needs to increase the campaign against the abuse of immigrants in the world. Currently, the campaign for fair treatment is largely left to international human rights bodies such as amnesty international, human rights watch, among others. The trade blocks and trade organization needs to join in the campaign since most of the crimes affecting immigrants are not only human rights, but also economic in nature. The open markets and the trade blocks are notorious for opening boundaries within specific regions. Such leads to migration within the countries. It is therefore, imperative that, in the process of creation of trade blocks, immigration issues be addressed.
