Sweden is a progressive country where women are equal to men in numerous ways. It was not scandalous when high-school girls were given the essay written by Adichie about feminism. This was a part of a greater movement which is well accepted in Sweden. It should be introduced in more countries, but the fact that it is established in Sweden is good.
Adichie talks and writes about the fact that women have human rights but that they also need to be looked at as female and have their feminine rights acknowledged. She says: “For centuries, the world divided human beings into two groups and then proceeded to exclude and oppress one group” (Adichie). This impacted me in a way that it made me think about Sweden as a great country for life, about the oppression of women through centuries and about what can be done to improve the role of women in public life today. Sweden really is a country whose government should be admired because of all the laws related to gender equality that this nation has. This essay was given in “the hopes of sparking dialogue about feminism in one of the most gender-equal countries in the world” (Wagner). It brings hope to know that feminism and the importance of gender equality will spread from Sweden to other parts of the world as well because feminism is not about women having privileges, but about women having rights. If I heard this when I was sixteen years old, I would be happy about it because I am aware of the importance of gender equality. This should be implemented in all countries so that a natural order could be restored. Women need to have their rights, especially the right to choose which would make them equal to men in the society.
