Whose story would you tell? Around whose basic point-of-view would you build the screen play? How will you resolve the story?
I would choose to write the screen play from the point of view of the journalists who are conducting the sting operation. It would portray the various attempts of the media to establish a connection between the regulatory authorities and the drug dealers and through this point of view the film would expose the regulatory system of Ireland, that the Government and the Police’s involvement in such dealings. It would be similar to an investigation where the protagonist will join the dots as information is revealed. This entire exposition of the authorities’ involvement is the plot of the screenplay.
How are you going to deal with range? What effect will this choice have on viewers' responses to the film? In essence, what sort of hierarchy of knowledge will you advance? How about depth? Are you going to stick to a primarily objective approach? Will you grant viewers access to the subjective states of any of the film's characters?
I would choose to keep the range restricted and limit the audience’s knowledge. I would only reveal as much information to the audience as the protagonist and reveal information steadily as and when uncovered by the journalists. The depth will be objective. I would like to use restricted range so that there is some room of anticipation and anxiety in the viewer. The only time I will as subjective point of view will be in the anti climax which will be through flash backs and memory recollection of the journalist that will be a pivotal role in resolving the case.
Plots are created in the minds of viewers; they are our response to the scenario we’ve viewed. This is especially evident in films that are told out of chronological order—where viewers have to straighten out scenes and mentally order them—in effect, completing or assembling the plot(s). Are you going to tell your version of the plot in a straightforward fashion, in chronological order, or do you have other plans for the scenario? The plot of the film will begin from the last bit where the questions about the drug dealers not being arrested in the case are raised by the journalists. So the narrative is going to be filled with flash backs and flash forwards. The plot is going to be investigative in nature and the information revealed to the audience will not be in a linear manner. The revelation will be in sync with the protagonist’s thoughts and inferences of the situation. This will provoke the audience to think along with the protagonist and there will be information revealed bit by bit which will act as clues to the case. Only at the end of the film will I use a subjective view to show how the clues all tied together with the case which will make the viewer understand how the case was solved. Since the narrative will be non linear the element of surprise will be higher as the anxiety level of the viewer will be high.
