Superman is a superhero known by all people in the world. Many young children identify with superman and an even greater number of young children aspire to be superman when they grow up. As such superman has a special place in the heart of every human being who has experienced or rather underwent a childhood. Superman is an iconic figure as far as the super hero universe is concerned and is revered by a very large number of people all over the world. The latest depiction of this iconic hero is the movie man of steel. This motion picture has been long awaited by the superman enthusiasts all over the world and its release came as a relief from anxiety and elongated periods of eagerness.
A film critic known as Jeff Bayer did an analysis of the movie right after watching it. Apparently this critic hates the movie from its very onset. This is because the first scenes of the movie depict the early life of superman and the destruction of his home planet of krypton. According to this critic this is nothing short of agonizing, the critic states that the audience has lived through this scene thousands of times before. Thus according to the critic it was a complete waste of time for this movie to have the depiction of krypton and how krypton was eventually destroyed. The opinion of this critic as far as this scene is concerned could not be any further from the truth. This is because any true superman enthusiast understands the significance of the planet krypton and the role it played in superman growing to become the hero that is world famous and revered as much as he is feared. This scene is therefore priceless as far as the movie man of steel is concerned and also in relation to any other superman movie. Man of steel even goes as far as to add several twists as far as this scene is concerned, the most obvious of which is the costumes being worn by the people of the planet krypton as well as the landscape of the planet krypton. In man of steel the landscape of krypton deviates from the crystals famous in most superman movies to a landscape that more and more resembles that of the planet earth. This scene is also very important as far as the personal identity of superman is concerned as well as his status as a hero and the savior of the planet earth from all kinds of threats be it domestic or alien. This is because superman knows exactly what conflict can do to a planet like the earth. Due to experiences from his very own home planet superman understands the value of maintaining law and order on a planet in order to ensure peaceful coexistence of the inhabitants as well as ensuring that the lifeline of the planet is not cut short by prolonged conflict. The critic is therefore very wrong in his assertion of the insignificance of this scene in the movie man of steel. If the critic was a true superman fan then the critic would by all means know just how important this scene is and the gravity of the true identity of superman and the circumstances that led to him coming to earth being portrayed at the beginning of the movie because these events are what put in motion what came to be known as the epic journey of superman, undoubtedly the greatest super hero of all time and by all means earth’s mightiest savior.
The critic also makes the statement that there is absolutely no warmth in this movie. This point of view of the critic is easily understandable and quite easy to relate with after watching the movie. This is because in this depiction of superman the man of steel is a lone ranger to say the least. Superman lives a life of isolation from the world and from his family. Superman would gain some closure in his friends but alas in this depiction he has absolutely none. Even Lana Lang who is very close to superman in the old depictions of the superhero is nowhere to be seen as far as the movie man of steel is concerned. Even the parents of Clark Kent, Martha Kent and Jonathan Kent, are barely prominent in the life of superman in the movie man of steel. In other superman appearances the kents are very much involved in the life of their alien son Clark Kent. The Kents are usually meddling in all the affairs of Clark even when he is a fully grown man. In man of steel however they are not as prominent as one would expect thus leading to the critic’s statement that there is absolutely no warmth in this movie. The only emotional part of the movie was when Clark witnessed the death of his father. The element of death in the twist however completely ruins the emotional allure of this scene and as such the audience does not want to associate with or even identify with this scene. After watching the movie it is very easy to understand why the critic says that there is absolutely no warmth in this movie but just a group of people going through seemingly emotional bankruptcy.
The critic also complains about the last battle in the movie lasting only thirty five minutes. Apparently the critic would like the final battle scene too last longer as well as the elongation of the other battle scenes throughout the length of the movie. Acton and battles are very entertaining as far as the superman franchise is concerned. What the critic blatantly fails too not is the fact that superman is not all about the action and battles that superman goes through in terms of physical confrontation. Superman has evolved from a mere fighter to a cultural icon. People who love superman love him not because of the fact that he beats up people but because of what he stands for. Superman stands tall as the personification of justice throughout the world. Superman embodies exactly what global justice is. He does this by ensuring that justice is served on all corners of the globe. As such the action aspect of superman takes a back seat to the bigger than life individual that is by all means superman. Superman does not need to be involved in constant conflict for his relevance to be established. The relevance of superman is manifested in what he stands for and his demeanor while fighting crime and dealing with the most violent criminals on the planet
