Abstract
Media companies utilize the media to provide information for the benefit of users. They also provide platforms for communicating information and sharing ideas. Multinational corporations are able to accomplish this on an international scale to an international audience. Comcast is such a media company. This research paper analyses the use of electronic media and Email in Comcast Media Company. This Media Company has made use of a wiki to streamline its websites to be user-friendly both to users and employees. In fact, the wiki the assimilation of the wiki into their websites has proven efficient. They have also used media platforms such as LinkedIn and Facebook to have access to the international community. Their clients’ security is a top priority and is guaranteed by their security feature. Forums are available for use to express concerns and share ideas: some of which is shared by the business executives for the benefit of the community. Like any system, their security has flaws which upon occasion result in security breaches. The Company exercises discretion dealing with security breaches of clients’ accounts and provides advice via electronic media on how best to secure account in case of security breach.
Comcast is a mass media company that was co-founded in 1969 by Ralph Roberts. It is considered one of the largest cable television networks in the US servicing 40 states. In terms of revenue ranking it is considered the largest broadcasting multinational company and the second largest paid television network. The company is heavily invested in electronic media and email through its daily operations and service to its myriad customers. The CEO of the company is Brian Roberts, the son of Ralph Roberts. The name Comcast was created from the two words ‘Communication’ and ‘broadcasting’. The company is headquartered in Philadelphia, the state of Pennsylvania. NBC acquired it in 2011 and now operates under its mandate.
Contemporary multinational companies are heavily invested in electronic media use and email correspondence. The use of email and electronic media is the key towards driving sales and revenue. In order to accomplish this, a company is required to set up internet use policies that are provided by the parent nation to streamline Internet Service Providers and own policies that serve to facilitate daily operations and protect privacy in communication. The company chosen for the purposes of this paper is a multinational corporation heavily invested in electronic media and email use. This research paper aims to determine how Comcast is using electronic media and mail.
Comcast/NBC has revolutionized the manner in which it collects and shares information with its users and employees. By adopting the use of a wiki as their main communication platform, the users have been able to access information – that previously took minutes – in seconds. This was largely attributed to the ease of use that the wiki system provides. Content can easily be streamlined by using wiki and users find it easy to post their ideas on the company website. In addition to this, the efficiency of employee performance in their daily operations has greatly been improved following the adoption of the wiki. The company has also utilized this system to satisfy customer relations through its efficiency, ease of access, user friendliness and the freedom to post relevant material.
Likewise, the company has also creatively engaged in media campaigns to increase awareness of its wiki system. Aside from this, Comcast is actively using internet resources to foster media campaigns for various reasons: mostly to advertise something. Previously, they have made use of the social media platforms: especially Twitter. They have also used their own broadcast shows such as NBC Universal to conduct media campaigns and other websites. According to the New York Times, however, they have recently introduced a new media campaign product known as a symphony: which allows other advertisers access to their own platforms. This is a groundbreaking opportunity in the media campaign industry to firms like Microsoft who can now have unlimited access to their customer base: given that it is one of the largest cable TV and ISP in the US and internationally.
Comcast is making use of the media platforms that are easily accessible and provides them with access to various classes of people in the society. They can have unfettered access to all classes of individuals through Facebook and Twitter: especially the young people. They have access to business minded individuals through LinkedIn and all other classes of individuals through Gmail and Yahoo platforms. In addition to this, they also foster and nurture customer relations by utilizing Comcast broadcast community forums where their subscribers/users can easily share information, ideas, express concerns, and their preferences. The company also has an online forum that provides business information to the users and aspiring entrepreneurs from the company executives.
Comcast caters to an international audience. They established in America and operate in over 40 states. Given its international coverage, the company takes the security of its clients very seriously. The Company mainly uses the Xfinity security system to protect its on-site and wireless networks. This is the company’s main security provider. According to the SC Magazine – a magazine that offers unbiased business and technical information – Xfinity is not without flaws: hackers can easily spoof the system and breach their security. Comcast customers are also facing challenges in term of security of their Comcast accounts and linked accounts. According to Plucinska, the company was faced with a major security breach that resulted in over 200,000 account information on social media. The company advised the users to reset their password and also denied any knowledge of being hacked
Conclusion
Comcast is a large company that has been in operation for decades. They have developed their clientele base and revolutionized the way they conduct their media campaigns. In fact, in terms of efficiency of providing user-friendly information on their websites, the company has succeeded by using the wiki system: a groundbreaking system of communication. Coupled with new Symphony system, advertisers from established companies such as Microsoft can now access their massive clientele base. The company has access to various email platforms such as Yahoo and Gmail: in addition to social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to gain access to an international audience. They employ adequate security to their clients despite complaints of account breach in security: which also allows a hacker to access to other customer’s linked accounts. The company has however placed measures to protect and warn clients of any account security breaches.
