In todays’ world technology has become part and parcel of everything that we do. Schools are automating their teaching and library services and governments are also automating the services that they give to their citizens. Why is this? This is because of the positive effects of technology especially in communication and the acquisition of information.
Kennard states that technology has made it possible for people to access large amounts of information. (1) This is through the use of Google search where one can find millions of newspaper and magazine articles, online books and journals. This has brought information closer to the people and it only takes a few second to access a magazine article or journal publication. Kennard gives the example of when one is looking for a job, all they have to do is look at job websites and they have numerous options to look at in seconds. (1) Gone are the days of poring through newspaper pages with a pen and making cuttings when looking for a job, the internet has made this easier and this has a positive effect to everyone.
Communication has been made easier by technology; mobile phones and e-mail have made it very simple for people who are far away to communicate. Today there are many social media sites that help people make new friends and stay in touch with old friends, they include Twitter, Facebook and Google +. Thomas states that social media has increased the social skills of students as they as they become more creative and learn how to state their opinions clearly and in a non-aggressive manner. (1) People are now able to make new friends from all over the world with who they share similar interests such as reading or music, all this is thanks to social media such as Facebook and Twitter all of which are powered by technology.
