The right to bear arms in America has become a hot topic following the numerous random shootings across the United States. For many years, the American citizens have the right to bear according to the American constitution (Winkler 113). An individual can buy a gun for their own protection or for their own pleasure such as hunting. The right to bear arms is one of the many laws that were implemented by the founding fathers in the Bill of Rights. The second Amendment asserts that “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” (D, 73). Thus, citizens are practicing their constitutional right by choosing to own a firearm.
The government has amended and passed different gun laws regarding the right to possess and use firearms. Today, the federal government has installed gun regulations by ensuring that people who use their firearms violently or endangers another person’s life is punishable by the law (Winter 93). Also, there are age regulations that ought to ensure that only adults have the capability to buy and owning a firearm. For example, an individual has to be of 18 years to purchase a shotgun or rifle and of 21 years of age to buy a hand gun. Gun laws aim at ensuring that the greater society is protected and that firearms do not land into the wrong hands that can cause chaos (Winters 94). It is also crucial to note that a background check is done to anyone who purchases a firearm so that only the law abiding citizens can own a firearm.
Implementing gun control would mean that all guns are outlawed and that the average citizen cannot purchase a firearm. According to 2013 statistics, there are about 30% of the crimes pertaining use of a legal firearms whereas more than 60% of criminals use illegal firearms (Cross 153). This shows that gun control would not limit violence or crime but rather make it close to impossible for the average citizen to defend themselves. Thus, prohibiting ownership of guns would put more people at risk because criminals have found an avenue to acquiring guns illegally (Halbrook 54).
Cities such as Chicago have tried banning gun ownership but repealed this law afterwards because gun violence and shootings did not reduce. Chicago had banned ownership of hand guns for more than a decade (Cross 164). However, the eminent crimes in Chicago steadily grew despite the gun ban measures that had been put across. Thus, citizens should exercise their rights by choosing to own a firearm for their individual purposes (Spitzer 82).
Regardless of the fact that this paper is pro-guns for the citizens, many innocent lives have been lost by being caught in a cross fire. Some of the people who have shot another person tend to claim self-defense (Halbrook 72). Thus, ownership of firearms may lead to reckless discharge that may be hazardous to the greater community. Also, the greater population wants to rely on police for their safety rather than choosing to own a firearm.
In conclusion, individuals should have the right to exercise their constitutional right by owning a firearm. Many guidelines have been put in place by the law in order to ensure that only the law abiding citizens can purchase a firearm. Also, criminals have a channel to acquire illegal guns thereby, increasing the rate of crime. Thus, legal ownership of firearm is good because it serves as a means of protection and that one can use it for pleasure such as hunting.
