United States Navy (gunner's mate position)
Introduction
The United States Navy occupational position of gunners mate is a position given by the bureau of naval personnel to particular sailors who either completed the initial gunners mate A school training or who qualify for the rating by exhibiting high competence in the ordinance field. The power of the individuals to be eligible for the position is based on the striking skills and when one is striking he/she do not necessarily require to be a seaman but can either be a fireman or an airman.
The research paper is in the United States Navy gunners mate position. It is aimed at defining the department it belongs to the American army, the structure, practices, and procedures and how it does its normal operations (Public.navy.mil, 2016). It also states the role of the gunners mate in the American military arm and its significance in the completely military industry.
The gunners mate position is a post that needs high specialty of skills and manual dexterity. The gunners mate perform duties that include, maintenance of weapons as well as servicing the weapons systems, maintenance of safety emergency flooding and sprinkler systems for ammunition and gun storage areas (Kennedy et al, 1991). The gunner’s mates have a very long and proud history in the United States Navy wing as well as some other services related to the Navy.
The work they typically face in their line of duty includes supply provision of the separate ordinance, requisition, securing of weapons and ammunition to the Navy upon directions made and dealing with firing and maintaining various types of arms (Babin, 1996, p.496). The gunner’s mates are referred to as a jack of trade with a reference that they perform a variety of tasks such as being responsible for all the available types of weapons and tailoring them occasionally to show specified kind of jobs or fixing the system of the weapons.
The gunners mate attend a basic kind of training where upon completion are designated to go, class, A school for the advanced training of qualifying for a gunners mate position then are ready for being assigned a duty station for work. The qualified gunner’s mates can learn how to test equipment and apply hand tools to perform casualty analysis and obtain solutions for problems in various devices (Public.navy.mil, 2016). Having abilities to do detailed work, performing of repetitive tasks and performing loss analysis among others are key values that gunner’s mates should possess for the best outcome in the performance of the Navy.
The duties they undertake are quite sensitive. Thus, the rating of the gunner’s mates has specialized standards of eligibility for credit worthiness, integrity, and reliability. They consider one to be a US citizen for security clearance and those found with drug abuse offenses are adjudicated. They should possess a normal color perception and hearing and designated to all kinds of navy environment like the shore, ship overseas or within the United States. The work they do may be indoor or outdoor jobs clean or dirty, within any weather and climate, deck or shop (Babin, 1996, p.499). They can work either alone or with others while being tightly managed. The gunners mate can deal with all kinds of jobs whether mental or physical as per the tests carried out on them.
Literature review
The general goal for the research exercise is to learn the structure of the gunners mate and their responsibilities regarding the criminal justice organization of the United States. The criminal judge of the United States works together with the gunners mate position in administering justice in the country (Usmilitary.com., n.p). The gunner’s mates being highly specialized individuals are entitled to the responsibilities of execution of criminals in the country by the criminal laws being enforced. The research, therefore, seeks to identify the kind of duties performed by the agency as far as the criminal justice of the United States is concerned.
The aim of conducting the research also is to obtain information regarding the practices and activities that are carried out by the gunner’s mates. The structure and the legal procedure of the agency are also points of significance to note from the gunners mates. It is aimed to apply the concepts of the coursework in the practice of the gunner’s mates to achieve the benefit of removing the doubts through having the opportunity of doing experiment thus getting first-hand information (Kennedy et al, 1991). The research will allow individuals to get in touch with the gunners mate directly, revealing the truth about the nature of the agency and the mode of operations in their particular organizations.
Methodology
The methods used in this research paper consisted of the following steps:
Conducting a literature search of books, articles, and magazines, Navy lessons learned, gunners mate websites, work force thesis, test report, the internet and other library resources regarding the topic under investigation.
In conducting an analysis of the gunner’s mates operations and their functions. I did a general view and surveys on the criminal justice agency of the United States to obtain information concerning the relationship of duties between the gunner’s mates and the personnel of the criminal justice department (Usmilitary.com., n.p).
A qualitative research analysis of the gunners mates, the Navy standards of operations and policy as well as navigation systems and qualifications of the experts. Analysis of the various types of machinery and weapons as well as other tools of operations is conducted and review of the past events is made. Compiling of all the information is done to enable for quality information regarding the gunners mate and its agency.
Analysis
The department's organizational strategies include the following:
The gunners mate training focuses on the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of the naval guns. They strongly emphasize and strategize on the basic explosives, guidance and tracking of systems, naval guns, small arms communication and safety (Bomar et al., 1996). When the members of the gunners mate group complete the basic training, they proceed to the specialized C school where they are trained to learn the particular type of weapon systems.
Gunners Mates operate and maintain guided missile launching and torpedo launching systems; gun mounts rocket systems among other equipment and systems. All crews are supervised by the gunners mates in all of their duties and operations (Public.navy.mil, 2016).They deal with corrective and preventive measures of weapons and equipment, and they also serve as team members that perform inspections and final closeouts checks on the arms and installing and removing the exploder mechanism of the torpedo.
The gunners mate’s external environment revolves around the United States military agency. The Navy is the particular wing that the organization and their instructions come from the commanders of the navy. The US government is the one responsible for all the activities carried out by the gunner’s mates, and all the weapons and equipment they receive are ordered from the government military agency.
Recommendations/policy implications/conclusions
The American Council on Education recommends the gunners mates should train eight semester hours in studies on principles of technology, two in hydraulics and pneumatics. Industrial safety should be awarded in the category of vocational certificate and more studies to be conducted on electronics. Gunners mate should be well trained and organized well for them to perform their duties successfully (Public.navy.mil, 2016). Finances should be made available for them to capitalize on quality weapons and technological advancement that will enable them to have a competitive advantage over their enemies.
