The proposed study will be qualitative in nature; hence the sample design to be applied should be suited for this kind of study. Undoubtedly, there are a number of sample designs that could be employed in this case. However, non-probability, and particularly convenience sampling or availability sampling, will be used in the study. With this type of only respondents that are easy to find and available would be taking part in the study.
The objective of the study would be assessing whether healthy eating/dieting habits could reduce the rates of obesity among the young people. Therefore, the sample for the study would comprise of two groups: those exercising healthy eating habits, and those that do not practice healthy eating habits. Individuals in both groups will be youths, possibly between the ages 18 to 30 years. The data collected from the two groups would clearly indicate the relationship between healthy eating habits and obesity/overweight rates.
Finally, there are a number of reasons why availability/convenience sampling is best suited in the proposed study. One of such reasons is because it is easy to apply considering only respondents that would be easy to find and available would take part, and few rules are taken into consideration on how the sampling process is handled. Besides, it is economical in terms of cost and time, hence it is least time consuming and cost effective. This is likely not to be the case if other sampling techniques were applied in the study. Lastly, it may be helpful in collecting data that could not have been otherwise collected using the other sampling designs, especially the probability sampling designs.
