Summary of Knowledge Without, Focus Within, People Everywhere
The essay by David Dalrymple talks about the internet changing the way people handle information. He used the word “filtering” as a skill that one needs to have to be able to make use of, and not be overwhelmed by, the tremendous available information from the internet. The author says that there are three main results produced by the arrival of the internet. One is information is managed by internet. The second is that there is too much distraction that people find it very hard to focus. And third result is we can contact any person we like to talk to from anywhere in the world very easily.
Another point that the author made in his essay is that the presence of so many available information can make it difficult for a person to focus. Focusing on one’s work is a skill that a person needs to have so that he/she can do his/her work well. By being able to focus, the person can produce good results. This is the meaning of the “focus within” in the title.
The second point in this essay is that internet users discovered that it is very fast to exchange information. As long as there is a connection, a person can send information right away. Another person can also get information very easily. It does not matter where one person lives. The important thing is that there is an internet connection. If there is a connection then exchanges, be it work-related or a form of socialization, could happen. This is the meaning of “people everywhere” in the title.
The last point that Dalrymple made in his essay is that, our use of the internet has become a basic function. He also emphasized that this use of the internet will continue to become better over the years. In the future, there would be more information shared externally and “knowledge will be fully outside the individual.”
