San Juan Capistrano is a renowned city situated in orange county, California. San Juan is one of the most preferred attraction sites in California State. The city is essentially popular for its iconic missionary elements (Young and Melba, 1988). Aspects related with the similarities and differences between Jewel of the Mission and New Parish Church are essential factors that attract visitors and tourists to San Juan Capistrano city.
In contrast to New Parish Church that is located at the corner of Camino Capistrano, Jewel of the Mission is located is situated at San Juan creek. Compared to New Parish Church that was built in 18th century, Jewel of the Mission is one of the oldest buildings in the city, constructed in 15th century (Leffingwell, 2005). The Jewel of the Mission is a self-sufficient quadrangle building. The building houses mission houses dining and living facilities, dormitories for Acjachmen Indians, shops, and storage rooms. The mission also houses soldiers, powder magazines, and a jail. On the other hand, the New Parish Church houses classrooms for teaching nuns, offices for various religious purposes, weaving shops, areas for treating hides, and huge rooms that serve as church for city believers (Yenne, 2004)
The two missions are strategic landmarks in the city despite their differences. These two historic missions where designed by renowned architects from various parts of the world. Furthermore, the popularity of San Juan Capistrano Mission is attached to these two main missions (Kroeber, 1908). The two missions are also the reference point for architecture students in the city. Lastly, a part from being the central tourists’ attraction sites, the two missions serves as conference centres for global leaders.
