The theme of Satan is clearly denoted in the book. As a general assumption, Satan is denoted with evil. In this case, the evil in the book revolves around Hester Prynne. Hester is the main character in the book and the author portrays her as an agent of evil in the community. Just like in the story of Adam and eve a woman is used as an evil tool. Hester’s tribulations are caused by her inability to withstand temptation. From this did, the author gives the theme on Satan the much required influence in the novel.
Hester had an affair with a minister. This is after she could not resist the temptation after her husband was out of the city (Hawthorne, 45). From this affair she conceived a daughter, Pearl (Hawthorne, 23). This affair changed the life of Hester, her daughter, the minister and her husband. The fact that the author included a minister in this relationship triangle was significant in portraying the depth of evil in this community. Satan targets the most holy individuals in the community. With the minister falling into temptation to commit adultery is evidence at the influence of evil in this particular community. According to Hawthorne the minister’s veil was not enough to put him away from the temptation (112).
The thematic application of Satan in this book can be closely related to the deeds and consequences of evil. Hester, Pearl and the minister have been labeled outcast of the community due to their deeds (Hawthorne, 76). This destruction of their welfare can be easily associated with the influence of Satan’s deeds.
