Who will say that technology has not made life easier? I guess only the backward minded persons might say that. Before the emergence of technology, with the various technological development, the world has been a better place. Technology in many industries has made life livable. It has made life adopt the very meaning of. Assume that the world was with no technology, how could we be surviving. Probably might have adopted to the situation by then but would not be as efficient as it currently is. A technology free world would be boring with very little to do apart from fighting, fetching firewood and protecting themselves against attacks from other clans. However, with technology, more working opportunities were found. It has come to my attention that not every person understands the importance of technology. Some of these persons embrace the idea but do not like how it is being implemented. Another person’s positive feedback may not be a positive after all. Those who have that kind argument despite the availability of facts. In this paper, much discussion will center around one who embraces the idea and the one who embraces the concept of technology but with criticism. These two persons, Michael Bishop and Sigmund Freud, have different thoughts about this issue. According Bishop, scientists take things apart so as to have a comprehensive knowledge about those things. At first, he was skeptical about the issue but after encountering postmodernist points of view about science. Therefore, from the statements, we can deduce that Bishop embraces technology and science wholeheartedly (305).
Freud’s criticism towards Bishop
Based on an article written by Freud, we can deduce that he is so negative towards science. Therefore, I am sure that the scientists will have to do a lot of convincing to Freud. According to Brown, he has enjoyed the fact that he experiences the efficiency and other benefits that might arise. Brown is of the idea that scientific knowledge should be accompanied by an increase in social businesses. As a science progresses, some of the problems that affect the society will definitely reduce. This implies that the traditional methods of solving issues and problems will be replaced by the quicker scientific methods. Therefore, Freud would not like this fact because he hates science. To Freud, there is a likelihood that scientific knowledge will not solve some social problems in the society. The reason behind his thinking is the fact that probably he might have gone through the same problem (306). Some of the questions that he might ask will actually be an in-house thing, that is, reflecting on what happened to him or his close friend. To him, he will have that notion that science does not make things easier, but manipulates things into being easier. If the technology was that efficient, how comes people die? Isn’t there a permanent solution towards such matters? Brown mentions that the pessimistic criticism has opted to have the idea that technology follows the concept of cheap enjoyment. From this fact, we can deduce who the pessimist (306).
Technology has made transportation very easier. Brown mentions that were it not for technology and in particular in the railway transportation his child would not have left his home. He also argues that were it not for travelling across the ocean, his friend would not have begun his sea voyage. On this factor, Freud will totally agree with Brown’s thinking. This point totally shows what technology has done to the people. Isolation is a very bad thing. With scientific knowledge, there is the use of technology to reduce infertile mortality. According to Freud, technology as not helped much in eliminating some diseases. For instance, AIDs. Medical scientists have been portrayed as insensitive to the AIDs victims through their controlled studies. This is considered to be totally wrong in the eyes of the society and Freud (307). There are many critical arguments that Bishop points out in his article the enemies of promise. Critically, bishops suggest that even if science has solved many human problems, there are still millions of people around the world who do not believe in science. Furthermore, there are many people around the world who are engaged in science matters just like they are engaged in politics. Bishops believe that the science offers human beings more things than they think.
Bishops main arguments are largely associated with modernism scientists who take science matters like politics. For bishop, these people are ignorant and should not be tolerated. In addition, those people who think that science is not solving the human problems should take their time and analyses their social environments. Some of the critics if bishop argument includes Freud. In this case, Freud would have argued that science is no longer helping in improving the living conditions of human beings. Freud particularly would have pointed out that science has accomplished little in the recent past. Advancements in science have greatly influenced the nature of human activities around the world (Freud, 61). Although it is true that such advancements have affected human beings life, they have also come at certain costs. With the recent wave of activities that challenge human behaviors, it is likely that many human beings will give up on sciences. Some of the areas that people are likely to give up in science include the areas of medicine and food production. There is still a large group of people who fear scientific ideologies. Their fear is a mixture of ignorance and to some extent based on concrete evidence.
Instances of researchers questioning some previous scientific findings are a true reflection of a society not ready to take all matters that science offers. Some of the people have also come out against certain scientific campaign due to their unethical nature. Although some people may call this pessimist criticism, it is arguably a major concern about science. In some instances, science has been blamed for certain issues such as the health problems. Many of health problems are not being solved yet tit is expected that science would solve them. Instead many science institutions have created more problems to people than they would have imagined. If scientists do not take their work serious, they would lose focus in their work. Science has been put down by people who are paranoid of research tactics. Furthermore, people are fearful of exposure of science into their life. In some situations where people must be engaged in scientific experiments, many people have shy since they fear they might be exposed to the scientific revelations.
Bishop arguments are focus and expectation is to ensure that people get the best out of science. The initial target of science is to help people cope up with the difficult situations around their life. Unlike, Freud, bishop article is meant to disapprove those people who attack science. In addition, he pays attention to the people who do not accept science since he believes they have legitimate arguments. It this article bishop argues that the science faces a deep crisis if people will not support in the right manner. It is, however, important to note that in some situation, the society has failed to recognize the need of scientific research. This has led to many scientists giving up easily in their work. The support of the, members of the society towards science is diminishing since many people are afraid of finding the truth about science. Freud, on the other hand, however, has failed to understand that some of the concerns in science cannot be dictated. It is important to note that the progress and effectiveness of science programs are driven by feasibility. Science is dedicated providing possibilities where human beings have failed. It is not solely dedicated to providing solutions only. Compared to Bishops, arguments, Freud arguments tend to be exaggerated since science has solved many human problems. Science has also increased human knowledge and human welfare (Freud, 61).
In conclusion, we can deduce that not every individual is into technology. There are just some people who are conservatives and hence cannot accept the fact that technology is there to make the world a better place. Even though science and technology have its misgivings, it is generally efficient and good. Brown represents an elite person who believes in technology and would stand by it because he knows the advantages of it. The society should, therefore, embrace technology and stop leading a traditional life.
