The aim of the project was to build podcasting system for the sake of emergency alerts capable of being transmitted through the network and compatible with any network device. Its scope was considerably greater as it aimed to provide an alert system which is more efficient and powerful than the present already implemented a system. The system should also cover all those shortcomings that existing alert system inherently possesses. The scope was achieved as the planned objective has been obtained, and an alert system was successfully designed as a thought in the planning stage.
Cost: The cost was actually supposed to be minimal. It was expected that resources required would be pre available in the University campus. Mr. Rose has already allowed using the campus computer lab to build the project. Although the campus computer lab was utilized at its fullest, there were other costs involved as well. At one time, paid consultancy was obtained for quality assurance purpose as we lacked the facilities to have an in depth assurance process. The actual cost had to deviate a little from the expected cost.
Success Criteria
The success criteria defined in the project scope statement was based on various factors. There was not any single element the fulfillment of which could be termed as the creation of a successful alert system; rather it depended on a number of different factors. The biggest criteria, definitely was to save more lives, in case there happens some emergency, contingency or undesired incident. This thing is not solely dependent on the alert system only. There are other requirements as well that need to be fulfilled to achieve this target. The project related criteria which could be termed as basis of success or failure could be described in following ways.
Speed of the communication: The system has to be efficient enough to provide an alert in the least time possible. Without proper execution and communication speed, the system will not be able to serve its purpose.
Cost effective: The system must be cost effective to design and implement. It’s operation must not put any extra financial burden on the user.
Results of the success criteria:
Speed: This objective was successfully achieved. Test a number of times. No issues regarding speed were observed. Although there involved some technical problems, but those were largely related to compatibility with different network or operating system. The execution speed or alert communication passed the test.
Cost Effective: Although the design and building of the system deviated from its original expected cost, it is still cost effective in financial terms.
