INTRODUCTION
Today human beings have reached such heights in terms of technology and research, that they have started forgetting the importance of other beings in the universe. Using animals for research and development activities is not a new thing. Not only is this but the use of animals for mere entertainment of the greedy humans also not new. From the testing of cosmetics and chemicals on animals to their use in cruel activities such as bull fighting and horse riding, nothing is separable. Today the time has come when people need to become aware of these merciless activities done on the helpless animals, using them for the purpose of humans that too in such a torturous manner are really hurting. There are many organizations such as PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) who take various initiatives to stop such cruelties. But their task will not be successful unless and until each and every individual takes their part of a contribution towards stopping animal abuse.
Choosing this particular topic for my research paper itself shows its reason. It's my step towards creating awareness for stopping animal abuse. And through this piece of knowledge I would like to make many other people, who have humanity left deep in them, to act towards such torturous activities. People participation is important as it will force the government to act towards organizations, farm owner and so on, who have been carrying out this activity without fearing the nature even once. Animal cruelty can be of two types either due to neglect or due to intentional reasons. Neglect is mostly the failure of the owner of the animal in providing adequate facilities. Such as proper Veterinary care, food, shelter, etc. These things can be tackled by enforcing some strict laws on keeping animal husbandry by individuals. For example, we have the Ontario SPCA; they educate the owners towards improving the animal's condition they have kept. And if the owner fails to fulfill all the criteria for taking proper care of animals, Ontario SPCA investigators removes the animal from control of its owner and takes them to some place which are specially setup to take care of the underprivileged animals.
Intentional cruelty is the darker side of animal abuse. It is hard to imagine that how can people become so emotionless towards these animals. Who have not even harmed them ever or who don't have that power also to overcome human efforts to torture. They can't even run away; these poor animals and their condition are really hard to believe. There are many cases where the animal is simply burned or poisoned and left for death. They wait for their torturous death to arrive, simply because they don't have any other option. Many animals like rabbits, Red fox, Beavers, dogs and cats and many other animals are skinned for fur. Many a times they are even skinned alive. They keep screaming in extreme pain, but no one is there to hear their cries. They are skinned alive and subjected to such adverse pain just for the sake of making human clothing. Is it justified? Ask yourselves. It is not wearing a beautiful fur clothing, but it’s about wearing some helpless creatures' pain. More than 50 % around fur in US comes from China. In China, there are no laws or penalties for abusing animals. Fur businesses keep these animals in run down cages in their fur farms and such acts of cruelty remains unreported.
Animal cruelty is not only limited to this, there are many other sides of it. Dog fighting in US is considered as a source of entertainment for police officers, it became prevalent after the Civil war. Dogs die in such brutal plays. How can anybody consider it a source of entertainment? More than 100 million animals are killed in several laboratories in US as a result of food, chemical, cosmetics and many other testings, every year. These animals generally include mice, rabbit, dogs, cats, birds and monkeys. . Circuses are the who keep animals (Elephants, tigers & monkey) chained in an unbearable condition and treat them with extreme cruelty such as beating, while making them learn some tricks.. Many zoos are there where animals are not fed properly neither they are provided with proper living. Animal become irritated in such condition. Their health degrades and many times they are simply killed and sold for skin. Bull fighting is another example of brutality. It makes me think a hundred numbers of times whether humanity is still left or not. Bull involved in the match looks very agitated but has anyone ever tried to analyse the reason behind it? Although bull is considered as a mild and calm animal. The reason is that, before the match bull is kept in extreme conditions. Wet tissues are inserted in their ears so that they cannot hear properly, jelly material such as Vaseline is put in their eye so that they cannot see properly, needles are inserted in their genitals, they are not fed properly even, kept in dark rooms for many days continuously, etc. These things agitate that bull, and he behaves vigorously during the fight.
Be it for any purpose the good or bad, but the use of animals for human benefits is completely against animal rights. People need to stop such cruelty. Today cruelty done them can be reverse on us someday, because it is a fact that a tit for tat does happen. People should stop using fur, how much ever beautiful it might look. But beauty is not worth a poor animal’s life. Testing of chemicals and cosmetics can be done in a much other way. Technology has developed that far that alternatives do exist. So animal testing must be banned as soon as possible. Brutal acts of amusement such as bull fighting should be banned completely. We will be eligible to be called as human beings only if we behave sensibly and also treat others in a sensible manner.
