Management
There is still a lot of work to do in the field of Engineering Concept of Operations (CONOPS), said Col. James Horejsi, a former Chief Engineer and Director of Engineering and Architectures at SMC. Currently in charge of the Aerospace contract at SMC, Col. James Horejsi spoke to us on February 6, 2014 on the importance of technical integrity. His illustrious career achievements are equally complimented by his wisdom; Col. James Horejsi completed his MS in Electrical Engineering from AFIT and also has 4 military education certifications. In addition to this, he is also the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, AF Commendation Medal, and AF Achievement Medal.
In his speech, Col. Horejsi emphasized the need for engineers to take ownership, and accept responsibility to ensure the technical integrity, quality, and performance of the product they handled. Regardless of the pressure they may face from certain customers to complete an assignment, they should attempt to resolve all technical issues at the lowest possible level using program channels, so that an inveterate business relationship of trust and equality is developed.
Col. Horejsi stressed the importance of teamwork and highlighted the need for engineers to always have an open mind when faced with the task of decision-making. This will not only help them plan better, but also help them understand different views that could be highly productive in planning their strategy or work. Never assume that you know all, for this could be counter-productive, and remember, it is the end-user’s necessity which has to be addressed, and not one’s own interests.
Reflecting on Col. Horejsi’s view on Engineering Concept of Operations (CONOPS), I, as a Project Manager, can do much to improve the quality of services. I must admit that there is much that a team can do if they work as a unit and give importance to their customer’s needs. One way of doing so, is by putting ourselves in their shoes to see if the service does meet our expectations. This way, we can ensure that we are on the right track and that our services are in keeping with our customer’s needs.
I am absolutely convinced that Col. James Horejsi’s views on ways to improve Engineering Concept of Operations (CONOPS), will be effective and change the way we service our clients. The speech and his supporting materials gave us a lot of insight into how services can be enhanced to please customers. I was able to understand what was necessary for me to make my organization improve our services to our esteemed customers.
