In his talk, Seth Godin labels our century as a century of idea diffusion, meaning that every day we get a lot of information and have to make many choices, however, we do not have enough time. Therefore, we ignore some messages that try to interrupt us that results in companies wasting money on the commercials that nobody cares about. According to Godin, the key point is to find the way to become unique and to target consumers who might be interested in the product.
There is a number of inventions that nobody uses, although they might be useful. And the issue should not necessarily be in the product itself, but in the way the idea about it is spread. A while ago TV was a popular way to advertise ideas. Those who owned the idea bought some ads to encourage people to buy their products, using the profits to buy more ads. However, this mechanism does not work as effectively as it used to last century. One of the reasons for TV ads to have become less effective is that there are too many of them. Thus, one of the ways to stand out is to introduce the idea that is remarkable. It is not a mass market any more, but a fashion business. Today we want to target not an average person from the middle of the curve, but those people who care and who are obsessed with something. If these people like our idea, they will tell about it their friends, spreading it all over the world, and you would avoid spending money on advertising. To develop a remarkable idea you should follow three rules. First, care about design. Second, move out of your comfort zone by doing something risky. Finally, not to be good, as being very good is boring.
