Seven pounds is an emotional drama, directed by Italian film director Gabriele Muccinno. Seven pounds got a mixed response from the audiences and is considered as a successful movie. The movie depicts several aspects of human behavior and gives a broader message to its audience. This Columbia picture’s venture was released in the year 2008. This paper intends to discuss the movie, seven pounds along with discussing several other related aspects of the movie.
The story of seven pounds revolves around Tim Thomas (will smith) who is an aeronautical engineer. Tim, while driving and sending text massages, caused a car accident wherein seven people lost their lives including his girl friend, Sarah Jenson (Robinne lee). This incident makes him upset, he finds himself unable to deal with the guilt feeling and decides to donate his all organs in order to give lie to seven good and needy people. His intention became clear at the end of the movie only and the movie managed to remain a kind of mystery for the rest of time.
Tim gives up his job and tries to find the people who really need help. He starts donating his body organs and assets to the people. He donates his liver, kidneys, lungs, bone marrow and his house to the people who were in need of these things. Tim has been portrayed as someone who is ready to die so that others could live life. Doing this helped him in getting rid of the guilt feeling that he developed after he caused the deaths of seven persons. Tim, at the end of the movie dies and his friend, Dan executed all his wishes.
The movie was rated as negative by the critiques but due to its emotional story and mysterious script, it managed to fetch good business across the world. Seven pounds gives several massages to the society and acting of will smith seems to be very good. Other artists also lodged their presence in a significant manner. He appears as someone who belongs to common man and looks as if sharing the pain of people. The story of seven pounds is entertaining, tempting and touches the hearts of people (Ebert, p 386).
Critiques of this movie say that there are a number of inconsistencies in the story o this movie and this is something which is not practical. People say that movie is a blend of several imaginary ideas that is rare to believe and perceive in practical life. Apart from several inconsistencies and an impractical script the director has been blamed for not using actors like will smith in his full potential. Acting of other actors is also not as per their fames.
After having observed the above mentioned analysis of the movie, it is good to say that seven pounds is a good entertaining movie that touches several aspects of human life. The movie reminds us of human values, selflessness, sacrifice, ethics and greatness. The movie is not for the people who have no idea about these above mentioned aspects of human behavior. It is not merely about just give and take or absolute calculations. The movie appears succeeding in delivering what it wanted to and without endeavoring to please everyone.
