Sex registries are laws in different countries that allow the government to keep the track of sex offenders even after they have completed their criminal sentences. The record is accompanied by the address of the offender in question. The offender may sometimes be put to a restriction that does not apply to other people. The jurisdictions even allows the courts to put such offenders under probation. The aim of the paper is to discuss the arguments about sex offender’s registry using four different sources, government report, non-profit organization, books, and documentary videos.
The government has passed an act that requires the sex offender to register with the Department of Justice. Title 1 of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety of 2006 created sex and Offenders Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). According to the Act, the purpose of the law are essential to the safety offenses of the persons. The system can track the offenders and give the information to the authority. Failure to register is a federal crime punishable (Department of Justice n.p).
Besides, according to La Fond, The author of the book called “Can Sex Offenders be Treated, he says that the sex offender behavior is hard to register, and they pose a risk to the society(5). He says that dealing with a person with such deviant behavior is hard to deal and thus the best proactive measure is sex registry (La Fond 7).
The Platinum Sponsor of the Nonprofit Risk Management Center argues that it is important for the sex offenders to be screened. They add that it is important for any organization to carry out criminal history search about their employees. It is to determine whether the employees have at any point been involved in the sexual offense (Nonprofit Risk Management Center n.p).
A documentary called Untouchable explains about the people who undergo through intimidation. It explains that a good number of people experience a lot of suffering by because they were branded sex offenders. The people are forced to walk in the shoes of the individual who have survived sexual abuse. The author complains that the sex offender laws should be relaxed (Feigen 9).
