Any human society can be conditionally divided into two parts in terms of gender. Sexual identity helps to understand one's biological role in procreation and influences people's social behavior. Belonging to males or females is traditionally associated with particular body and character features that are exclusively characteristic of men or women and considered as factors determining life roles. Gender as a binary relationship is a controversial question, comprising both nurture and nature issues. Therefore, it should be regarded from both points of view.
Sexuality and gender identity resulted in social stereotypes of human behavior and psychological, mental, and physical qualities that are associated with masculinity and femininity. Living in the society requires adhering to such stereotypes, but being a girl or a boy does not necessarily mean possessing the expected strains and body type. In one respect, a person is brought up in compliance with longstanding sexuality norms. In another respect, it is understandable that the reality does not always correspond to the declared standards. For example, such features as weakness, emotionality, expressiveness, and obedience are normally assigned to women while power and decisiveness are thought to be the peculiarities of men's nature. People are placed into rigid boundaries instead of developing their inborn talents and feelings that are not dependent on sex.
Sometimes cultural concepts do not coincide with human nature, and an average person faces difficulties with self-identification, having some sides of the character that are said to belong to the opposite sex. The existence of gender identity shows the possibility of a discrepancy between body parts, hormones, and feelings. One’s physique and self-realization may sometimes differ. This phenomenon gave rise to such concepts as being not only male or female, but also being of both or neither sexes.
Summing up, gender identity is determined by both biological and social features. According to the viewing on the gender as a binary relationship, people play their roles in the society in terms of sexual division, but in the course of time, the boundaries of gender identity are expanding, giving more opportunities for personal development.
