How we view ourselves as male or female
Human beings have always viewed themselves as male or female through an individual’s genitalia and their reproductive organs. This is one way that has been used to describe humans for a long period. When the sex of a person is mentioned, the physical features are the main items that are checked to ensure the sexuality of the individual in the case. People therefore; think of their sexuality by linking it to their physical appearance and to their reproductive organs. This is taught from an early age and children can distinguish between males and females at such a young age. An example is in the American culture where a baby born with a vagina is a girl or a female. They are expected to grow; talk and dress as a woman as the culture considers. Therefore, they will grow up with these features. This also applies to babies that are born with penises and are considered as males (Crooks & Baur, 2011).
Under this comes the gender that is an internal feeling of what people want to be regardless of their biology. Across the globe, people have changed their names and other factors so that they could earn a name appropriate for the sexuality that they feel that they fit in. Activists across the world are struggling for the term gender norms to be ended so that both males and females will be considered as one. This is because it denies the people a chance to be associated with the gender that they want to be in. A person with the organs that are perceived to be male organs will want to bear the name of the opposite gender and engage in the sexual roles of the other gender. Therefore, sexuality in the modern world is what people feel satisfied to be in.
How we express these views
We express these views by the roles that we play in our life time. For example, when we view our sexuality to be that of male, we tend to focus on roles that are masculine. This also applies to when a person is a female then they will also focus on activities that are feminine. This is first achieved by the first way that people feel about their sexuality. This is by the comparison of the reproductive organs and their physical appearance. A person will wear a skirt because they feel to be feminine and therefore the need to wear a skirt. A person will also indulge in work that includes lifting heavy materials as they feel masculine, and the work fits in what they believe in. This is because we feel that this doing this acts then it shows that we appreciate our sexuality and therefore embrace it.
In the gay and the lesbian communities, the people will dress in the opposite way so that they can express their sexuality. A male who feels to be more of a female will dress as a female, talk like a female and indulge in activities that will show that he appreciates being a female. This is a way of showing the expression and also attracts attention to people who are interested in such characters. If not so, it will be very hard to distinguish between a gay male and a straight male. They both have to express their views in different ways for the purpose of being recognized. It also shows what a person feels and a way of making sure that their decisions are respected and that they are not questioned by anyone concerning the same (Rutte & Schwartz, 2012).
What does it mean that the sexuality does not end at a certain age?
A person’s sexuality does not end at a certain age due to many reasons. On the first view of sexuality through physical appearance and reproductive organs, they are permanent, and the person will keep viewing themselves that way because they will never change at any age. The organs, therefore, will stay until the person dies and therefore there will be no any age limit that has been put to that. As long as the organs are there then the person's sexuality will always be there. It will be a significant part of their life, and they will use it to give advice to young prospects on the issue of sexuality. They will rely on the reproductive organs so that they will educate them. Therefore, as the young people start understanding about sexuality, they will refer to their reproductive organs, and this shows that there is no limit to sexuality.
On the second where a person is allowed to choose the sex that they think they fit in, they can do so at whichever age they choose to. No one also stops them at any age from perceiving that they are of the sexuality that they want to be in. The freedom of sexuality in some countries is not limited to a certain age, and gay and lesbians can leave for as long as they want to continue with the relationships without having to worry about anything. It’s their decision to make on when they can start terming themselves in another sex. The sexual organs in this case do not matter in any way. They can choose to start perceiving themselves as otherwise at the age that they feel like doing so.
Does sexuality end with chronic diseases?
Sexuality still cannot be ended by any factor that might be noticeable in people. Sexuality plays a very pivotal role in ensuring that the people that have chronic diseases get the energy to go on. Sexuality is, in fact, the reason many patients can stay alive and live with the challenges that they receive from the chronic diseases. Sexuality makes human beings stronger and gives them a sense of belonging. By carrying out activities that are guided by their sexuality, then the patients can live with the challenges. Many females become models so that they can be able to spread the awareness of the diseases that they have. This makes them feel even stronger as they are doing activities that are guided by their sexuality.
This proves that chronic disease does not end sexuality but instead sexuality helps patients to survive with the chronic diseases. It is important, therefore, for patients to use their sexuality to their advantage and be able to live with the chronic diseases without having to worry. Sexuality should be the strength that guides everyone, and if used appropriately then, it will give good results that will help the patients.
In what ways might sexuality become more important after a diagnosis of chronic illness?
Sexuality as mentioned early is the feeling that a person has on who they are and mostly helps them achieve what they want. Sexuality can have a major effect on a person after they have been diagnosed of chronic diseases. They can be able to use sexuality to their advantage so that they can leave and even spread the awareness of the diseases. Through the activities that have been sidelined, either masculine or feminine, the people can use this activity so that they can gain what they want. For example, men can take on boxing and other masculine activities and the females can take on modeling and any other feminine activities. This will help them to live with the diseases as they promote their sense of living and will live to achieve more (Kramer-Kile, & Osuji, 2014).
Through sexuality, a person can also be taught about many things that will help them with the disease as well as achieving their dreams in the future. Something like advice will be given appropriately according to the sexuality that the people feel comfortable. This will promote self-acceptance that is the only way that they will get to live with the chronic diseases and be able to survive normally like any other person. Sexuality leads to self-acceptance that in the case helps people that have the chronic diseases to be able to survive. Therefore, sexuality is paramount not only to chronic diseases but also to any other kind of illness that may affect the people. Sexuality is a key aspect that doctors keep in mind when issuing treatment to the patients so as to help them appropriately with a lot of participation from them. People close to the patients are also advised to respect the sexuality of the patient and use it to promote them.
How and why is sexuality a critical aspect of quality of life?
Sexuality as mentioned earlier brings out the self-acceptance and a sense of belongingness in a person. These are the major aspects that lead to a high quality of life. People can accept themselves and also be able to accept the challenges that face them and act on them so that they stop being a roadblock to their lives. If a person gets to accept themselves then they have the ability to live a life that can be termed as a quality life. Therefore, all that is needed from sexuality is for the people to accept themselves the challenges that they are facing, and they will have a good life.
People with chronic diseases have first to show their acceptance for the disease so that they can be able to fight it appropriately. This is what can be termed as a quality life that the people will show from their will to live with the disease and ensure that it does not affect them negatively instead. People that suffer from chronic disease can live a quality life like any other person whether they have a chronic disease or not. This is however determined on how the approach the situation. If they do it negatively then they will not be able to live happily as they are expected but will end up having a life that is full of difficulties that arise from their lack of self-acceptance. The patients, therefore, have to accept themselves, accept their condition and live up with these conditions for life that can be depicted as a quality life (Larsen & Lubkin, 2013).
How do healthcare professionals “ignore” sexuality?
Health care professionals ignore sexuality by not treating their patients in a way that appreciates the sexuality of a person. Males and females have different ways in which they can express themselves and also want others to treat them. If they are not treated in this way, they feel that they have been compromised and therefore it becomes very hard for them to live or to mingle with people that treat them in that way. This has been one area that has not been understood yet by health professionals. This should apply mostly to the people that are sick from chronic diseases. This is because their conditions are complicated, and they have to live with it for the rest of their lives. The best way to encourage them is treating them as they expect from us and the doctors as well (Bancroft, 2010).
