Bernard Boursicot, a French embassy accountant in the town of Beijing truly felt in love with Shi, a Chinese opera performer. However, I think Bernard can be graded as a homosexual because even after being in a position to view Shi for the first time dressed as a man and moved in the surrounding as a man, he never believed Shi’s masculinity to be an artful mien. Also, the Shi’s claim that the first time they made love with each other, he realized that Bernard had great tendencies in homosexuality, which Shi continued to describe as being gentle, very considerate but not harsh. Therefore, from my perspective, Bernard is a gay but in the real sense; he loved Shi with all his heart.
