Since time immemorial, dogs played various roles in man's life, including being hunting dogs, guard dogs, pastoral dogs, sled dogs, and working dogs. Another role that dogs perform is that of a companion dog, which is very much different from the previously mentioned dog categories. Companion dogs do nothing except provide pleasure to the dog owner as a toy dog and escort. They don't work and are most often small. A Shih Tzu is an example of companion dogs that is a wonderful family pet that gets along well with other dogs and animals.
Shih Tzu are said to have originated from China because of its strong association with Buddhism, thus making it one of the esteemed dogs in the country. The name Shih Tzu means "lion dog" although there is nothing fierce about this dog breed. The term is simply borne out of it having a long, shaggy mane and longhaired coat. Generally, male and female Shih Tzu grow up to 10 ½ inches tall and can weigh between nine and 16 pounds. They usually have long and silky coats that come in various colors such as black, gray and white, black and white, or red and white. Shih Tzu with a white tip on the tail or a white blaze on the forehead makes it even more valuable. When it reaches its 10th month to first year, it begins to shed its puppy coat to silky adult coat. Thus, daily brushing and combing is important to prevent tangles. Because it is predisposed to dental problems, it is also essential to include tooth brushing as part of its daily routine, apart from grooming, nail cutting, and ear cleaning, among others.
Shih Tzu is an alert and lively dog. It is naturally friendly and unassuming, but needs early socialization and training to ensure that the dog grows up happy and sociable. Otherwise, there is a tendency to become a shy dog when not exposed to other dogs at an early age. It is also playful, clever, affectionate, and courageous, and likes being in the company of humans. However, because of its small size, people tend to "spoil" them a lot, which gives the Shih Tzu a feeling of "power" over humans and other behavioral issues such as growling, separation anxiety, snapping, and biting, among others. These behaviors are not typical of Shih Tzu, but are induced by humans depending on how they treat the dog. When it gets its regular dose of sunshine and has a healthy channel for its mental and physical energy, then its temperament improves greatly as it becomes a sweet and trusting dog.
A Shih Tzu's lifespan is about 15 years, but they are prone to spinal-related diseases because of having long backs and short legs. They also tend to develop ear infections and eye problems. They are also inclined to developing respiratory diseases as manifested by their tendency to wheeze and snore when asleep. Because they easily gain weight, overfeeding them should be avoided. Owners can evade this problem by ensuring that the dogs go on daily walks and romp in safe and open areas. However, it is important to note that Shih Tzu are sensitive to heat.
All dog breeds have a purpose and Shih Tzu functions best as companion pets. It is perfect for families with children as they can sit and play with them on the floor, without fear of dropping the dog accidentally. Thus, owners should not expect their pet Shih Tzu to perform other role such as hunt dog or guard dog because they were not created to do those tasks.
