- Introduction of the topic of homosexuality
The topic of homosexuality attracts global debate with different institutions taking different stances on the matter. Homosexuality refers to the formal agreement between two people of the same sex to indulge in sexual activities and to a greater extend even live as couples. The so called liberalised institutions argue that there is nothing wrong with that and that the parties involved do it with their consent. Other institutions especially the religious groups sharply criticise this behaviour and condemned the entire act of homosexuality. This, they argue, leads to moral decadence of the society and that it should be abolished.
The topic as to whether homosexual partners should be allowed to adopt children is subject to debate with over a third of people rejecting this move. This paper looks at the cons associated with homosexual parents adopting children. There are a number of factors that when well considered show that homosexual parents do not give all the requirements of a child for sound growth. The factors range from psychological, natural to the risks posed to the child.
- Reasons against Homosexuals adopting children
- Conception
Naturally, a child is bone by two people of opposite sex. Basically this shows that both the male and the female parties have a role in the conception and therefore upbringing of the child. Homosexual adoption denies a child either a mother or a father all the time. By allowing homosexuals to adopt children then sends the message that mothers and fathers are interchangeable. This implies that a mother provides nothing unique to a child’s upbringing and vice versa. By legalising homosexuals to adopt children means contradicting the universe’s natural setting.
- Parenting
Psychologists argue that a child grows well in an environment that has both the mother and the father. They further emphasize that each parent provides a unique contribution to the growth of the child. The child does best further if the parents are the biological ones in a long term marriage. Research reveals that a child brought up in a fatherless setting suffers almost in every sphere. They have higher tendencies of substance abuse, loneliness, physical and mental illness and educational difficulties. Apart from being counterintuitive, this deprives a child the benefits of being raised by both parents (Ryecroft, 2001). Usually, a caring and compassionate society comes to the rescue of a fatherless or motherless child. Families are never designed, however, to deny a child the mother or father.
- Child Abuse
Children adopted by homosexual parents stand a risk of being abused by the parents in many ways. It is clear that same sex parents cannot offer all the requirements- material, emotional, and psychological to the child. This in effect amount to deprivation of parental rights from the child. Further, such parents say gay parents are prone to sexually abusing the child. For a while, homosexual critiques doubt the mental and psychological soundness of homosexuals.
- Moral Reasons
Another reason for discouraging homosexuals from adopting children is that the child is likely to grow up with loose morals on matters regarding sexuality. Societal values suggest that sexual relations should exist between people of opposite sex and hence subjecting a child to a homosexual environment greatly affects their thinking on sexual matters.
- Conclusion
- Respect for the natural setting of universe in terms of procreation.
- Psychological and emotional reasons as a result of parenting
- Risk of child abuse and
- Respect for societal values
In a nutshell, it is unfair to allow homosexuals to adopt children as they do not provide the best for these children.
