The question of whether middle school students should be drug tested is getting hotter. Some people say that middle school students should not be tested, while others are for the test. I support that middle school students should be drug tested. I will support my stance through giving some pros of drug testing middle school students and then refuting the counterargument.
Frequent drug testing of middle school students will help reduce the chances of drug abuse among the students. A survey that was conducted in New Jersey indicated that frequent drug testing makes students less likely to use drugs in their later years. Additionally, testing the students at their early life stages can help discover those who are already abusing substances and then help them at their early stages. Through tests, the students will also be able to learn the dangers of using drugs, hence avoid them. Finally, through drug testing, schools will have fulfilled their duty of raising a safe and responsible society.
Critics disagree with drug testing middle school students basing their argument the cost it will impact on schools. Apart from the costs, the question of whether students will accept to be tested raises concerns. However, everyone must understand that change is inevitable. We must accept change even when it comes with cost. The lives of children ruined through drug abuse are worth no money. Additionally, students will be educated on the benefits of taking drug tests. They will understand that it is done for their benefits thus will be unlikely to reject the move.
It can be concluded that in case drug testing middle school students will provide a solution to this menace, then I support it.
