Part 1: Introduction
It has always been an issue these days on whether the State should legalize same-sex marriages between heterosexual couples and those that consist of gays and lesbians. It was in the 26th of June 2015 that the United States Supreme Court announced the legalization of same-sex marriages (ProCon.org 1). Prior to this decision, as much as 37 States in America had legalized this sort of marriage, with the remaining 13 States in disagreement with legalizing the doctrine (ProCon.org 1). The decision, however, has aggravated the issue even further, as a substantial portion of the population opposed the move. The proponents of same-sex marriages argued that this type of marriage should be protected by the constitution, while terming it discriminatory if not allowed. Yet, there were also opponents to gay marriages, who maintain that the institution of marriage should be respected as that between a man and a woman. It is a question, hence, whether same-sex marriage should be legalized.
Part 2: First Premise
Same-sex marriage should not be legalized, since history has proven that the institution of marriage takes place between that of a man and a woman. The tradition has been practiced in many regions around the world, as religion has supported this doctrine to be the most insistent since time being. As reflected in one source found in the Web,
Marriage has always been a covenant between a man and a woman, which is by its nature ordered toward procreation and education of children, and the unity and wellbeing of the spouse. (TFP Student Action 1)
If marriage is a covenant between a man and a woman—and nothing in between—then it is only rightful that same-sex marriage should not be legalized by all means. Legalizing it would destroy the consecration made between man and woman. Even in the book of Genesis, it is clearly asserted that a man and a woman must come together and create a union that would encourage procreation. Thus, same-sex marriage should not be legalized.
Part 3: Second Premise
Secondly, same-sex marriage should not be legalized, since it would be harmful if in case the couple decides to adopt a child, who would grow up under the care of another couple other than his/her real parents. It is satisfyingly acceptable that children should grow up under the care of their real parents, and not under the authority of surrogate mothers and fathers. Kate Hilpern, in fact, mentioned in her article how Rebecca Walker stated,
I don’t care how close you are to your adopted son or beloved stepdaughter, the love you have for your non-biological child isn’t the same as the love you have for your own flesh and blood. (Hilpern 1)
If this is the case, then they would be denied of their rights, since they would not be genetically connected to both, or either, of his/her parents. They would grow up without having the rights that other citizens were destined to have, and this may have an effect on the child’s emotional and psychological wellbeing, as they grow up denied of their rights. If this is the case, then same-sex marriage should not be legalized within the society.
Part 4: Third Premise
Thirdly, same-sex marriages should not be legalized, since there are high chances that the change in the view of marriages would weaken the institution of marriage, which in the end would weaken the institution of the family. The future generation would find it more difficult to value marriage, and may tend to ignore what populations had been witnessing since time immemorial. With the constitution of marriage weakening, the establishment between the union of the husband and wife will start to weaken as well, until it crumbles from history. Nowadays, the society has been facing challenges in the institution of marriage, as an effect of the high rates of divorce, and the total number of children who were born out of wedlock. At this day and age, it is evident that same-sex marriage should not be legalized.
Part 5: Objection
Although there is a strong credence that same-sex marriage should not be legalized around the States, there is still an objection that it is high time the society should allow the legalization of same-sex marriage. Legalizing it would increase the number of children who grow up to be at risk of experiencing anxiety and depression, as an effect of being denied having a natural father and mother. More so, it will weaken the institution of marriage by creating a naturally sterile union. However, proponents of same-sex marriages claim that prohibiting homosexuality rights is discriminatory and would likewise increase the risks of experiencing anxiety and depression. It subjects the couple to higher degrees of humiliation in the eyes of the society, while being denied of their rights in health insurance and protection. It should therefore, be acceptable for same-sex marriages to be legalized.
Part 6: Response to the Objection
Under the objection that the legalization of same-sex marriage will protect the rights of heterosexual couples, including the gays and lesbians, it cannot be denied that its legalization will stand as the cutting edge of a sexual revolution that took place in the 1960s. The society will be made to accept something that is morally wrong, as something that should be morally right. As the Chicago Free Press insisted,
The gay movement, whether we acknowledge it or not, is not a civil rights movement, not even a sexual liberation movement, but a moral revolution aimed at changing people’s view of homosexuality. (TFP Student Action 1)
Under this cause, it is evident that the overall morality of the people in the society is much more significant than giving the rights privilege to a trifling portion of the population. Thus, it is rightfully acceptable that same-sex marriage should not be legalized by all means.
Part 7: Conclusion
If same-sex marriages would be legalized by the constitution, the future generation would find it difficult to value the marriage institution between a man and a woman, which had been accepted to be the basic doctrine for many ages. Already, the institution of marriage is facing obstacles because of the way the society is made to accept in its doctrine what is supposed to be morally wrong. Homosexuality, however, should remain immoral, as it really is. Such behaviors would be destructive to the traditional values of the society that made humans highly distinguishable than the lesser forms of species.
