A. This paper analyzes the pros and cons of having school uniforms and whether it impacts the development of students.
II. INTRODUCTION
A. In recent years schools have developed a more liberal view on the subject of uniforms.
B. Danielle Dreilinger (2013) tackles the different reactions that different parties take on the issue of school uniforms.
C. The weight of discussion against the use of school uniforms carried greater weight for me. The cons for use of uniforms carried the day.
III. RESEARCH METHOD
A. Two different researches were conducted that led to two similar conclusions. The two studies aimed at showing the importance of not having school uniforms.
B. The research relied on observation, questionnaires designed for students, teachers and parents. The study also relied on previous observations.
C. The second study was carried out by Danielle Dreilinger for NOLA.com. She took into account the perspective of parents and the uniform vendors.
IV. RESEARCH MATERIALS
A. The research was conducted by interview thus there were recorded audio tapes used in the collection of data. Also, the researchers were allowed to access data on the in-school and out-of-school suspension rates prior to and after the introduction of school uniforms.
B. The research also relied on observation of school students before and after uniforms were introduced. The second study also compared prices of uniforms in different stores and identified materials used in making the uniforms.
V. RESEARCH RESULTS
A. Different results were obtained per study. Findings were as follows:
1. Study 1:
- The rate of in-school suspension decreased from 40% in two years to 30% before the introduction of school uniforms.
- The rate of in-school suspensions increased to 49% the year after the introduction of the policy.
- The rate of out-of-school suspensions before the introduction of the policy was circa 30% in previous years but increased to 40% the following year and 43% the year after that.
2. Study 2: Danielle’s Study:
- Uniforms cost as much as $87 for a blazer.
- Many parents who did not buy uniforms before only bought one since they could not afford more.
- Uniform vendors knew the plight of parents and that most schools were in over their head on classy sophisticated looks.
- Many parents rely on vouchers to buy the recommended uniforms.
- Uniform sizes differ from normal clothes sizes - a problem for parents who buy them in the absence of the children.
VI. DISCUSSION OF THE FINDINGS
A. Uniforms did not improve the situation as hoped. There can be different reasons for that. One possible reason would be that students felt that uniforms limited self expression. Increased rates of suspensions could be a cry for help.
B. Danielle (2013) noted that some uniforms were very costly. This shows why parents may be against use of uniforms in schools.
C. Comfort is another possible cause to the above results.
VII. RECOMMENDATIONS
A. Scrap the school uniforms policy.
B. Set a school dress code that does not require uniforms.
C. If uniforms have to be worn, find cost-friendly versions.
VIII. CONCLUSION
A. School uniforms are not necessary. They are an unnecessary expense.
B. Uniform concerns distract from the primary goal of learning.
