Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Therapy and Adlerian Therapy have different philosophical perspectives. According to Corey (2018), Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Therapy argues that personality develops from one’s identification, ego, and superego. On the other hand, Adlerian Therapy argues that a person’s interpretation of early events plays a crucial role in their present behavior. Thus, the two therapies aim to explain the variation in human behavior.
Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Therapy and Adlerian Therapy possess clear concepts. The main argument in Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Therapy is the idea of translating psychic energy to a particular behavior. Conversely, Adlerian Therapy’s main argument is enlightenment on challenges, which offers an opportunity to overcome inferiority (Corey, 2018). The two therapies have a different perspective on human behavior but have given clear theories in overcoming personality issues.
The goals in Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Therapy and Adlerian Therapy vary. In Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Therapy, the main goal is a cure through making a patient’s unconscious thoughts conscious. Corey (2018) argues that Adlerian Therapy's main goal is to make people more confident and comfortable. All in all, the two therapies help people improve their lives.
Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Therapy and Adlerian Therapy possess differences in the therapeutic relationship. First, Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Therapy relates a patient’s condition to distress (Corey, 2018). Conversely, Adlerian Therapy relates a patient’s condition to inferiority. The theories behind a patient’s condition guide counselors who refer to the two theories in developing effective treatment plans.
Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Therapy and Adlerian Therapy have different techniques and applications in cure. Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Therapy dwells in encouraging patients to gain insights into their behavior and define their symptoms (Corey, 2018). On the other hand, Adlerian Therapy encompasses four stages in treatment: engaging, assessing, insight, and reorientation. Thus, the techniques for the two therapies may differ, but they prove effective in cure.
Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Therapy and Adlerian Therapy have a contribution to multicultural counseling. People have multicultural buried thoughts, and Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Therapy helps patients through in-depth talk that resurfaces the thoughts, subjecting them to examination (Corey, 2018). Adlerian Therapy also helps in multicultural counseling by addressing concerns in modern society, which could alter a person’s confidence. The two therapies practice multicultural counseling based on the root causes of an issue.
The limitation of Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Therapy to Adlerian Therapy is prediction towards a patient’s defense mechanism. Some patients may find it difficult to unveil their past events (Corey, 2018). Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Therapy could make assumptions on a patient’s inability to disclose what they feel, ignoring the contribution of genetic factors to their condition. The assumptions in Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Therapy may make treatment ineffective.
The basic contribution of issues related to evaluating the effectiveness of counseling is the ability to record a patient’s improvement. According to Paries (2018), issues that measure the effectiveness of counseling help counselors know what a patient has overcome and what they are yet to overcome. In addition, patients have different paces in recovery. Therefore, counselors can use issues that measure effectiveness in counseling to determine if a patient needs a change in treatment methods.
Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Therapy and Adlerian Therapy have limitations. First, Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic Therapy may be ineffective if patients feel they are not ready to disclose their past events (Corey, 2018). Conversely, Adlerian Therapy cannot help a patient if the patient does not have any childhood memories. The limitations to the two therapies are similar, which means treatment depends on a patient’s capability to disclose their inner thoughts.
I would include Adlerian Therapy into my theoretical orientation to help understand human behavior. Personalities differ in individuals, and most of them are based on one’s early life. Understanding one’s past could lead to the emergence of elements that require study to help a patient overcome their condition. Therefore, it is crucial to have an in-depth conversation with a patient to help them disclose what could be challenging.
