Introduction
The essay will research the growing population of Sikh community in Canada. The time period that will be covered in the essay will be from the 1960s to the 1980s. This period comprises of the major and continuous Sikh population wave immigrating to Canada. During 1960s, Canadian immigration laws were relaxed that facilitated easier emigration (Nayar, 2004, p. 160-168). In 1984, operation Blue Star was launched by the Indian government against few Sikh separatist militants. The resulting consequence was the prosecution of Sikhs, leading to several Sikhs fleeing India for foreign shores to escape the violence. Canada was one of the countries, where the Sikh population grew significantly in the 1980s and the following years (Basran and Bolaria, 2008, p. 30-58).
Thesis Statement
Overall, the Sikh population grew between 1960s and 1980s in Canada, as the country provided better socio-economic opportunities to the emigrating Sikhs, and many came in search of a safer living environment in comparison to their homeland in India (Walton-Roberts, 2003, p. 42).
