Everyone in this world appears to be determined to make things faster and faster. Technology is a very effective medium that assists people in their race against slowness and it provides us all the modern tools that make our life faster. Today, we are in the era of internet, cell phones, faster vehicles, supersonics, microwaves, and all other machines that perform their duties in a faster way and save our time but like everything else, this fastness also has other aspects and people pay heavy price in lieu of being faster. London based Canadian journalist and author, Carl Honoré discusses this issue thoroughly in his book, In Praise of Slowness: Challenging the Cult of Speed. This paper intends to discuss the book and what author tries to convey along with other related aspects.
While advocating slowness, Carl suggests following it in every chapter of his book. Each chapter talks about one subject like education, health, work and then measures up to slowness with each topic. Author, in his book, discusses about the problems and complicacies created by the fastness and then come with the solution, which is the slowness. Author suggests use of slowness in education, health care, food along with every other aspect of life and corroborates his opinion with several examples of real life.
Since author focuses on almost every aspect of human life, he also advocates slowness in personal life. He talks about sex and suggests different methods of sex that are slow and give full pleasure to doers. Author also suggests exercising yoga in their life. He also talks about taking rest from work and work slowly while working. Author suggests that taking rest ad working slowly assures the perfection of work and leaves very rare scope for any fault.
After having observed a detailed analysis of the book and his idea of slowness, it is good to conclude that the author has succeeded in giving a bigger message to the society and that is to just enjoy the life and every aspect of life. Slowness gives the opportunity to enjoy life without making it much complicated. Author suggests that fastness snatches the life and precious moments if life from people and compels them to be directed by the clocks and machines while slowness provides them the opportunity to live life in its natural way.
