I played for three years in my school varsity soccer team from 2008 to 2010 inclusive. Our team went on to be the champion in our league. The experience of playing this team sport has vastly improved my teamwork and communication skills.
In a game such a soccer, team work is imperative. Whether in training or in a competitive match, it is vital for all players to be aware of the rest of the team.
Being an effective team player involves much more than being a friendly individual. Firstly, it requires intention. Choosing to be part of a team is a big decision if it’s to be taken seriously. Commitment is the second major point. Sticking to the original intention, despite the opposition, takes courage, especially if a game is going badly and therefore there seems no actual reward for doing so. Discipline is vital to good teamwork. Working for the good of the team and not striving for personal glory requires this skill. Finally, being unselfish is a central point to working in a team. Recognising that the team is bigger than the individual is the key to this.
Good communication skills are also fundamental to being a good team sports player. Being able to communicate with the rest of the team, both verbally and non-verbally, are vital.
These skills are transferable to many parts of my life. Intention, commitment and discipline are vital to a successful academic life and, furthermore, to a successful career. Communication skills are also hugely important in these areas.
