Sociology is a study of human institutions and relationship on how they affect our life. Different institutions such as family and educational institutions affect our lives in various. This paper focuses on the family institution and how it impacts our lives. A family is a group of people joined by birth, marriage or co-residence. The family set up highly affects our view of living and determines how successful we become in some aspects of life.
Modern societies have different family set ups including nuclear family, in this; we have the father, the mother and the unmarried children. The other types include multifocal which consists of the mother and the children, extended family which refer to people who share the same blood, polygamy, where one partner has several partners and lastly blended families is where a partners who were initially married or had children bring together their children and starts living as a family.
Different family environments affect who we are and hence how we relate to people. A male child raised in a multifocal family lacks a father figure hence in his life he may not be able clearly to know how to behave like a man. The mother is highly influencing the kid.
Being brought up in a blended family has got its share of praises and unpleasantness. Every parent has his or her children to show love to and the other partners kinds to extend love to. Such a family is always rocked with issues especially when the resources to be shared are inadequate. Each parent works tirelessly so as not to appear to favor his or her kids if the relationship has to survive. I have been raised in search a family as the first child of the two parents. The family is always faced by constant mistrusts among different parents in support of my elder brothers and sisters.
Being the first child in such a family exposes someone to many things at a very early age. You can develop conflict solving skill; the skills are as a result of being exposed to the world of conflicts at the family levels. Compromise is also another aspect a child learns if the family has to remain. Compromise remains a necessary skill to prevent conflict; you learn to let go what is disputed. Apart from all the skills, I have learned from the family the strict family rules have influenced my moral fiber.
Gender is the sexuality of a person. The society I live in is a highly sexualized society with more importance being placed on the male child. Even though there have been several affirmative actions’ to provide an enabling environment for the girl child, the society remains subjective to the cultural setting where the male was considered superior. Being a male child, I have more freedom and privileges in my society, a boy child always has the inheritance rights and many other privileges that the girl child lacks.
Race and Ethnicity refer to both the biological, physical attribute of an individual and the cultural set up of the group. It is sad that even at this age racism is still a hot debate, where you considered more superior or inferior because of your color. My family is based in an area with predominantly the same race and ethnic group hence I have little racial experiences.
Social classes are defined by similar groups that share similar economic factors. The measure of social classes is predominant material thing including money, property, etc. Living in a society that is highly organized on social classes highly influences a person opinion in everything. Being raised in the lower middle-class family I have always associated those in the upper classes to be proud. However, I have always worked very hard to join these upper classes.
