Definition of the Issue
There are pertinent social issues concerning children that exist in the world today. One of the most disturbing social dilemmas is child pornography or sexual abuse. As defined, child pornography means “any visual depiction involving the use of a minor, or one appearing to be a minor, engaging in sexually explicit conduct” . Statistics revealed that the trend for children being abused through visual depictions have significantly increased by as much a 5000% from 2007 to an astounding 22 million images and videos exhibited in 2013 .
Impact on Society: The World, one’s Environment, to Me
There are disturbing negative impacts of the social dilemma to society. As learned, “a child who is the victim of prolonged sexual abuse usually develops low self-esteem, a feeling of worthlessness and an abnormal or distorted view of sex” . There were reported evidences of children becoming mistrustful, withdrawn, and even have tendencies for attempting or committing suicide . As such, children who became victims of child pornography and are the future stewards of the next generation would have debilitating impacts in terms of lower productivity, feelings of pessimism, as well as inability to perform according to standards of excellent performance. Moreover, research disclosed that other negative effects concerned male children who evidently manifested tendencies for causing teen pregnancies, having more sexual partners, and engaging in unprotected sex, as compared to the male counterparts who were not sexually abused . Overall, one would be more anxious of perpetuators’ seemingly callous ignorance of the impact and would therefore look for ways to assist in addressing this social dilemma.
