I cannot remember much about my learning socialization, especially at the very early ages, but I remember that when I started to learn my environment, there were many toys in my room, including cars, teddy bears, a toy gun among others. There were also a number of charts on common household items such as TV, knife, cups, plates etc, a chart on body parts, domestic animals among others. This means that my early learning on how to read and write relied on some of this information in my room.
Some of my early memories of learning relate to the activities of my mother and her involvement in my learning. I remember that my mother would sing a song and request that I sing along, she would also tell a story and ask me to tell her what I have learnt, and in most cases, I would just shrug and move on. In those early days, I remember that I had simple child books that my mum normally helped me read, and would try and explain to me what the content was about. I was also taught the alphabet, albeit a bit of it at home, as well as vowels and sounds, and by the time I was in preschool, I was able to write a few of the alphabet s as well as numbers one to five.
My experience in reading and writing relates to a large extend with that of the children in these three regions. For instance, it’s almost a similar experience with regard to the baby’s room in the way it is designed as well as furnished. The items found in the baby’s room for all the four settings are more or less similar. Notably too, the learning aids used by all are almost similar, such as books, stories, word pronunciation among others. In all these areas, the children are also taught good manners such as how to say sorry, please, thank you and goodbye, which can relate to my early departure.
The main points of departure, in the acquisition of reading and writing skills in these regions is that for Trackton for instance, the caregivers do not seem to be involved so much in the learning of the child, as is evidenced by the fact that the caregivers do not make attempts to try and understand the child’s learning process, like their bubbling sounds and all, but assumes that the child is simply making noise.
After a clear analysis of Maintown, Roadville and Trackton, I feel that I am able to identify more with Roadville, for the simple reason that the caregiver is fully involved in the development of the child’s literacy skills. Some of the other points of convergence include.
- The content of the babies rooms such as wall hangings, charts, colors, shapes and texture, as well as the ‘see’ theme, where the child is expected to learn a lot from what they see, from a very early age.
- Parental involvement in the child’s literacy acquisition such as assisting in sounds, words as well as listening and all that is something that I identify with. Reading stories or books for the child between naps and before bedtime is also an important aspect that can be related to both Roadville and my own literacy acquisition.
I believe that my early literacy acquisition has had great influence in my comprehension, communication as well as listening skills, skills that have been very instrumental in my adult life, as I am able to communicate effectively, which is a very critical skill in modern adult life.
Most importantly, I learnt invaluable skills, skills of being courteous, to be able to say thank you when need be, to say please when I request something from someone , to say sorry to others when they need it, and generally to relate well with others, skills that I believe were nurtured in my formative years.
Concerning whether there is something that I would do differently in relation to my children’s literacy acquisition, I would say yes, there are quite a few issues that I would love to address in my children’s learning. First of all, we must appreciate that times have changed, and technology has also changed too. I believe that although I received great learning with regard to literacy acquisition, incorporating technology in my child’s learning is something that I would definitely consider. This is because, technology has become a critical aspect of our lives and therefore the earlier one learns the use of technology the better for their personal and professional development.
