Race in other countries Interview
I interviewed a Pakistani male in order to explore the concept of race prevailing in his country. He told that Pakistan is one of the leading racist countries in the world. The concept of race in Pakistan is associated with the background of an individual, such as an Asian-Indian individual or an Asian-Pakistani individual. I compared this concept with the prevailing concept of race in the United States. In the United States, race is associated with being an individual of Latin origin or an individual of Hispanic origin. In the United States, there are just only two categories, which are Latin or Hispanic for ethnicity or race. The interviewee was surprised to know that just two categories give importance while categorizing people on the basis of race. The people of Pakistan, however, hardly tolerate people of different race and ethnicity. The interviewee mentioned that Pakistani Muslims are the dominant group in Pakistan, whereas Christians and Hindus are the minority or subordinate groups. In the United States, American Indian, Hawaiians, Blacks, and Asian Americans are racial minority groups, and white Americans constitute a dominant group. The interviewee told that in Pakistan, racial minorities are given equal treatment. Such as while giving jobs, Pakistani Muslims, are given preference. Same is the situation prevailing in the United States, where equal or fair treatment is not ensured with minorities. Further, in Pakistan, racial minority people prefer in-group marriages. But, in the United States many people go out of their races and do marriages. They do not restrict their thinking just to their own race. People living in the United States do not mind to marry a person belonging to a different religion. This fact also surprised interviewee as he was also of the opinion that marriage should be with individuals of the same religion.
