The instructor, being a man was dressed officially in a short and trouser. The class was diversified in terms of culture and race. The teacher therefore taught with power point presentations as he slowly explained some of the major points. This was to ensure that those who could not understand him because of the accent could read the points on presentation. I also realised that most of the lesson was used to answer questions as students were required to read prior to the lesson. This ensured all students were met at their very point of need and also for the teacher to move faster with the syllabus.
Most of the male students wore either jeans/material trousers with shirts and t-shirts. The females were however dressed in all manner of attires. One could easily tell those from conservative cultures and those of secularism. I also observed students from at least three different races by looking at their skin colour. From their interactions however, I realised that they had appreciated each other and therefore assisting each other in class work. For instance, when the instructor was away, I could observe groups of three interracial people discussing about what the teacher had said.
All the students could speak and understand English even though their level of fluency was different. Those from the Asian communities had quite a difficult time understanding English and they were the ones asking most of the questions in class. I could see how they struggled to express some statements in broken English but still the message was communicated. The teacher and other fellow students quite understood and I could observe this through their patience. Since most of the work was to be done on a personal basis by the student, most of them did not mind the pace at which the Asian students took to grasp words.
I learned that since the subject they were doing was not necessarily do with effective language, students who struggled with English did not have a hard time when it came to performance. Papers were not marked basing on language quality but on facts to explain the point. Students were mindful about each other’s space, which was expressed on how they handled each other. During class time, I observed to see if there was any form of giggling especially when a student struggled with English. I did not see this behaviour even though some students would escape into their won world especially if they felt the topic was boring or a particular student was asking too much.
I was actually amazed at how the students interacted despite the fact that they were from different races. I inquired about the same and I was told that the class had been together
For years they and therefore understood each other. They understood about each other’s weaknesses and strengths and therefore learnt through such diversity. They have also been encouraged by their instructors to seize the opportunity to learn about each other’s culture, as they may never know where they will end up in future. Apart from the barriers that are brought about by language and culture, they have also realized that they have similar abilities to excel through their exam results. This therefore makes them to have such respect towards each other. It has also interested the students to know about how people from diverse communities behave and relate with different aspects of life.
