The film starts by introducing a town that was known as to be the richest city in America. The children talk about the good buildings in their town. Just ten minutes away drive is Camden. Both these towns are in New Jersey, which is one of the richest states in America. Camden has the highest rate of crime rates in the 2004/2005. Most of the poor communities do not even have places to sleep. Conflict theory tries to explain the violence that happens within the poor community. Most of the people are criminals engaging in drug trafficking. They way of life usually leads them to constant conflict and hence the rise in the number of deaths. In Christmas holiday 2005, there were four slaying every forty-eight hours. The rate was seven times that of the national state. There could be thirty three drug raids every morning. The structures of Camden allow for criminal activities, this supports the structural functionalism. Most of the empty builds became bases for hiding drugs. Families in the lower social class suffered the most.
My social class has affected most of my activities. The buildings in our neighborhood are structurally arranged. Structural functionalism do not allow for crime. There is a definite order for to be followed by everybody in the corner. There is less conflict in our community. Conflict does not occur where people are in harmony with themselves and this is supported by the conflict theory. We try to mimic the lifestyle of those in the first class, symbolic interactionalism, also allows us to be at peace with ourselves. I come from the middle class, in the middle class we try mostly to be like those in the first class and try not to be like those in the third class. Not many people in our neighborhood practiced polygamy. They intend to keep families that they can provide for.
