Abstract
Illegal Immigration has been one of the biggest problems for the government of the United States and several Border States as several measures has not helped in reducing the flow of illegal immigrants. The increasing flow of illegal immigrants costs the state government and taxpayers more annually. In addition, the New Mexico government has allowed the development of several sanctuary cities and provides basic education, health and law enforcement facilities to illegal immigrants that cost legal citizens. To have an effective Illegal Immigration Bill, it is important that basic facilities provided by the state are restricted to illegal immigrants, which would work as a shield and ensure the flow of illegal immigrants will decrease and over a period of time the incoming illegal immigrant flow can be eliminated. This paper will analyze the means that can be utilized in an Immigration Bill that can help the state of New Mexico achieve its objectives.
Immigration Issues and Reform
Introduction
Illegal immigration is a major concern for the state of New Mexico, especially due to its adjacent geographical location to Mexico. Every year, the state witnesses several illegal immigrants crossing the border and entering the United States. There have been several discussions over the management of illegal immigration and despite strict patrolling of borders the illegal immigration is still ongoing.
There have several measures that have been proposed over the years to solve the problem of illegal immigrants crossing the border. One of the best ways that can be utilized is through passing a law that restricts entry of illegal immigrants and prevents the government to provide them with government assistance. The bill will help in making sure that illegal immigrants choose to stay away from New Mexico as they will not get any government assistance. The bill will also help in making sure that the state will save tax money on serving the incoming immigrants.
The Immigration Bill
Following legislative suggestions are suitable to achieve the goals:
Anyone employing an illegal immigrant (individual without U.S. citizenship), will be prosecuted or fined by the state.
Eliminating sanctuary cities in the state of New Mexico and deportation of the illegal immigrants residing in them.
Increasing interior enforcement through immigration agencies and state police. Deporting Mexican offenders without any proof of US citizenship.
Passing entitlement benefits to an individual in New Mexico will only be possible through proof of U.S. citizenship and has to be a resident of the state.
No driver’s licenses will be issued to an individual without a valid proof of US citizenship.
Public educational institutions will only admit students with valid proof of US citizenship, as the public education system is funded via taxpayers. No illegal immigrant should be allowed to educational rights in the state.
No individual can benefit from the public monies in the state, unless they have a valid proof of U.S. Citizenship and reside in the state.
Any individual, who is caught in an attempt to use U.S. or New Mexico public benefits without holding a valid U.S. Citizenship proof, and residency of the state of New Mexico, will be deported.
Final Recommendation
The above mentioned regulations will be added to the Immigration Bill and presented to the New Mexico Senate. The Bill will be presented before the upcoming 2016 Presidential elections, taking advantage of the current heat developed over illegal immigration by Donald Trump and years of spending on illegal immigrants that costs every legal citizen $1000 per year to support illegal immigrants. In the year 2012, Illegal immigrants were providing $1.8 billion annually through economic activity to the state. But, they were also costing $438 million annually in education costs and $54 million annually extra for teaching English language to children of illegal immigrants. The additional cost of social assistance and healthcare also add $108 million annually and law enforcement costs reach $76 million (Shaw). Overall, the bill will ensure that illegal immigrants are not provided these basic services and it will enforce them to avoid entering New Mexico and settling in the state. The annual budget of the Immigration bill is expected to be around $1.2 billion, which will reduce annually as the number of immigrants move back south of the border and their jobs are filled by legal American workers.
