After almost 55 years since the first human flight into space, we have not yet developed space technology enough to settle in the neighboring planets and the moon, as expected by our ancestors. But in spite of the gradual and perhaps not such a rapid development of space technology, as we would like, the humanity moves progress forward and dreams about the cosmos. Every year mankind spends huge amount of manpower and resources for space programs, which are realized, forcing science and technology to move forward. And it's not a waste, but it's an investment in the future.
Unfortunately, despite such obvious things, there are enemies of development of space technology, considering that this is a waste of money that could be useful for the realization of other, more mundane ideas. Who is right? Those who see the humanity to be a space civilization, have strong arguments in their favor: in favor of space exploration.
Great inventions. Medicine, energy, information technologies, transport, biology: it is only a small part of the industries that have taken a step forward thanks to the space industry. Even many of the things that have become familiar to us already, were developed initially for astronauts, and after have been used in our everyday life. For example, Teflon, which is used on every modern kitchen, due to its unique properties was used as a coating at Apollo spacecraft. No one remembers satellites when turns on the navigator, and in fact they provide the link.
Protection from asteroids. No one, perhaps, will deny that one only Chelyabinsk meteorite caused great damage. But its size was only about 17 meters. What to say about space objects with larger size that could threaten the Earth. For example, an asteroid 100 meters in diameter can cause a fire storm and debris from the hot atmosphere to raise a great amount of dust which closes sunlight. This will inevitably cause damage to nature and lead to the destruction of crops, and even if someone survives, there will be problems with the food and the environment. The development of the space technology will allow us to detect similar asteroids at a great distance from the Earth and to prevent its collision with Earth.
Source of inspiration. Remember yourself as a child engrossed in reading books about astronauts, aliens and distant planets. Space is a great incentive for development. Restless man's mind, nourished with the ideas of Mars, will be looking for solutions to the problems. Hardly will you think about the development of the planets, if you do not hear any news about what the astronauts re-conducted studies that found a new companion water on a distant planet that found cold land can be inhabited. Show the person that life on the moon is possible and it will be inspired by it, will certainly destroy all obstacles on the way to his dream.
Development of medicine. Space is unusual for the human environment in which he can feel quite different. It is because the medicine is developed in conjunction with the development of ships and space stations. Terms of weightlessness and the absence of large numbers of people who could help a person in an emergency situation, forced to build robots that could perform complex operations to create new drugs and tools that can bring man back to normal operation as soon as possible. For example, studies carried out on the International Space Station, helped to find a way to deliver cancer drugs directly to the tumor.
Resources. Nearby planets are rich in precious metals and other minerals. Exactly like asteroids that fly in our solar system. Some commercial companies are seriously thinking about developing technology that would allow to extract valuable materials from space objects and return them to Earth. The Moon can be an example, where the soil is rich in helium-3. Helium-3, a rare earth element, so its cost is very high and amounts to about $ 5,000 per liter, but it can be used in medical equipment, and as a potential fuel for nuclear power plants. There are also many other valuable elements, such as europium and tantalum, which are used in electronics. Either way, the possibility of mining beyond the Earth causes serious opportunities for the humanity.
The need to colonize other planets is precisely the necessity. World population is growing rapidly. In addition, the ecological situation is becoming every year more and more intense, causing concern. And indeed, there are many threats that hang or can hang on humanity. Therefore, probably, we have no other choice but to search for planets similar to our Earth. Even if a person will be able to inhabit, let’s say, Mars, in any case it will be a huge step in space exploration.
Many people are opposed to space exploration. And they can provide following counter arguments about space exploration. It is immoralt to think about the cosmos, because there are still so many unsolved problems in the world. Earth is the only living planet, there is nothing outside but only lifeless and uninteresting stones.Why should we fly into space when the depths of the ocean, the Earth's interior, Antarctica are still not yet explored? The Space Age was over and it was replaced by a era of information technology. Space projects deplete the state budget, making it weaker and more vulnerable. Each civilization is good in its place. Humanity is perfectly adapted to the Earth, the other planets are alien to us. Space should serve the Earth's economy, and not vice versa.
Space exploration has a positive impact on humanity. In addition, fundamental space research have a strong direct effect (which can be compared, perhaps, to the defense industry) on the development of technology. This is due to the constant demands of experimentalists to improve the sensitivity, resolution and improvement of other parameters of scientific instruments. Fundamental space research gave a powerful impetus to the development of our ideas about the structure of the universe.
