Spirituality is compatible with relationships because indeed the plan of God right from creation is that human beings should have mutual relationship procreate and fill the Earth. Spirituality and relationships or marriages are closely tied to each other because relationships affect a person’s spirituality. It is however important for one to remember that spirituality is only compatible with relationships through self-control.
Paul Wilkes explains, “Relationship is born through transformation of friendship”( Wilkes, 2009 p. 179). Relationship comes in when friendship becomes deeper. Christianity teaches a person to embrace friendship with other people regardless of whether Christians or of other religions. Human beings are mortal and social beings contrary to animals or other beings, they have the ability to think and make informed choices. God therefore did this specifically to allow them to relate and make strong bonds. Strong relationship helps somebody to observe Christian values because relationship teaches humans to love, the main purpose of God.
It would be true to say that relationship is inseparable from spirituality. Paul wanted to be a father, devoting the whole of his life to serve God but his love for women denied him the chance. There have been reports that Catholic Church fathers with high reputation engage in fornication, which is a sin according to Christian doctrines ( Wilkes, 2009 p. 201). It is however important to acknowledge that there are so many people facing the same dilemma as Paul and other fathers. It is very possible for one to serve God while at the same time have a family. Paul clearly states that if someone knows that he cannot control himself then he is free to marry. Pastors, Reverends, and Bishops are usually married yet they serve God. Relationship challenges spirituality and so balance of both is crucial for a better Christian living.
