The emphasis at Starbucks regarding the organizational behavior motivational strategies, promoted by the company’s CEO is that employees should be motivated to work for Starbucks prior to their employment in this firm, as the article “How Executives Hire: Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz on Finding Motivated Employees” indicates (Trammel, 2013). The article speaks about what Starbucks’ CEO, Howard Schulz, believes about motivated employees and what is his strategy for having motivated people to work with and this is the specific reason for which I have chosen this article, as it elaborates on an organizational behavior issue focused on employee motivation.
The article points Schulz’ business strategy for having motivated employees, as he explains that for attaining this end, people must want to work for Starbucks, they have to be determined and convinced that this is the company that they want to be in. Moreover, the article states the company’s business philosophy, underlying that Starbucks is a people company, engaged in the industry of serving coffee, therefore, all employees of this organization must be aware of this aspect and embrace it. The article also points that once people join Starbucks, they must enter the organization’s vision, and follow the objectives set. Likewise, Schulz speaks in this article about the importance of defining clear visions so that the employees to understand and pursue them through their activities.
The organizational behavior that the examined article describes relates to McLelland’s theory of needs motivational concept. According to this theory, people are eager for obtaining achievement, knowing what they desire, working hard, and even risking for obtaining what they proposed. They also need affiliation, to be part of a group that shares the same vision and values and they need also power, structuring the efforts of others for attaining the organizational goals (“McLelland’s Theory of Needs”).
