Introduction
Stars Hollow Hat Company is a manufacturing firm that manufacturers and coincidentally looks for market for her finished good. Given this nature, the firm would thus require three major departments along which the job families shall be aligned. These include: management, production and sales. The following discourse focuses on firm in terms of the probable job families that would project the firm into greater heights of development.
Management/ administration: members of this department are charged with the supervisory role of the entire firm. They are mandated with the day to day decision making and ensure that both the process of production and sales runs without experiencing any hitch. The department will be headed by the chief executive officer who will be receiving guideline decisions from the board of directors of the firm. The department will also consist of managers of yet the other two departments: production and sales. The other members of this department will include the human resources manager and the public relations officer.
Some of the key requirement for those to be hired into this department include: a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in business management with a speci9alization in the area of interest such as marketing. Experience in the area would also be fundamental to the success of the execution of the duties in the department. The department would also offer a good platform for motivation, employees who shall have excelled in the areas of their operations especially heads of the other two departments, would be promoted to hold some other administrative positions while creating room for others to appreciate too.
Production: this department forms the heart beat of the firm; it will be headed by a productions director who will also be a member of the department of administration. This manager will be the one in charge of the daily operations of the means of production. The department will be subject to growth depending on the market demand for the company’s hats.
The department will constitute several machine operators and packers who will be at the bottom end of the ladder followed by their supervisors who will be executing orders responding to the productions director. The department will hire personality based on their production skills with a bare minimum being a diploma certificate in textile production. Experience would also be of an integral role in the successful execution of the orders. Promotion through the department will be based on the growth in competence of the individuals as one would move from being a mere operator to a supervisor.
The sales department: this form yet another department that is of immense contribution and determinant of the firm’s existence. The company manufactures hats and sells them directly to their clients; the success of the sales thus depends on the success of this department at executing its obligations. The department will be constituted of sales representative headed by a marketing manager. Their main objective will be to ensure that the company’s products are sold and the firm gains profit from their sale. The head of this department, the marketing manager will be a member of the administration and will be responding to the chief executive officer.
This department will have personalities with marketing skills as well as accounting skills. As they sell the products, they will be tracking the growth at the firm and this is best done with effective book keeping. Such people as accountant will therefore belong here, other members of the department who will form a majority are the sales representative or agents. Members of this department through their head will scout for customers and sale the products to them, in addition they will be mandated with the management of the customer loyalty lists and promotions among others. It will be within their authority to design and come up with any promotional guise that will result into increased sale of the company’s hats.
The department will consist of some of the best marketing moguls who will be able to package the product into sellable ones. For one to be hired into the department as a sales representative he or she will be required to hold a minimum of a diploma certificate in sales and marketing or a related field, a degree in the same will be given more consideration. Experience, creativity and a good sense of humor will be of essence as well.
In retrospect, dividing the company into job families would be of much essence in ensuring a smooth operation. Information flow is defined with this strategy and it becomes easier to track sources of failure and corrective measures would be easily affected. As is the case at Stars Hollow Hat Company, this design in management will result in easier appreciation of employees and determining which department or family to increase or reduce to favor the operations will be easier. Decision making is enhanced too with this type of organizational structures, financial accountability is also enhanced as each and every operation or deal that the firm engages in is fully monitored with the concerned personalities taking caution and responsibility in equal measure (Stefan, Christof & Jochen, 2008).
