In the past six years, I have worked in various areas of medicine in an effort to find the best career path for me. It is from this working experience that I have decided to become a nurse practitioner. Working with nurse practitioners in a busy Hematology/Oncology Clinic solidified my decision that this career choice was the best option for me. Having worked with both nurses and physician assistants, I have realized that the nurse's role is more appealing. The close relationship that nurses have with their patients, which comes from long-term care, and the idea of treating the patient rather than the disease, is what appeals to me about nursing.
There are a number of institutions where I could join to pursue my nursing career, but my heart had settled with Regis College. It was easy to choose Regis Colleges, especially as I had a friend, Joy Ambrifi, a current student of the Regis Masters of Nursing Program. In addition, I was convinced by various other factors that this was the best institution to undertake my nursing program. It is important that I feel comfortable in the city where I choose to study, as it will help me focus on my work. Weston is an ideal location for me to pursue my studies. Driving through Weston was comforting, as it reminded me of my own small hometown. I attended a university in the city and learned that environment and atmosphere is not for me. After two years in the city, I transferred to a smaller university in the suburbs, where I enjoyed living and learning. When I first stepped into Regis College campus, this beautiful small college drew me in and felt like my perfect fit.
I took the initiative of visiting Regis College, with the help of my friend Joy, and in the course of the visit I managed to talk to a few members in the administration. I was pleased in the manner I was received, and how the Dean spoke to Joy as if she were a close friend or family member, and not just a random number in a sea of students. Besides, I had an opportunity to speak with Sean Sendall, the academic advisor. I felt comfortable speaking with him and I was surprised that he took his time to answer all of my questions thoroughly. Furthermore, I had an opportunity to go around the campus and the classrooms. Professor Wong was nice enough to show me around the simulation lab. My experience visiting Regis College made me feel like part of a family. A few days after the visit, I received a personalized mail from Sean Sendall, and I was even more convinced of the personal attention that the administration takes into their students. Following this visit, I had no doubt Regis College is the place to realize my dreams.
Besides, Regis College is well-known of offering high quality education, as evidenced by the programs recognition by the NLN. Therefore, I have confidence that I will excel in my studies in this college. The faculty is highly accomplished, and the program itself is set up to help students get the most out of their education. I learn best in a hands-on setting, so I appreciate that students learn in a classroom and then immediately apply their lessons to a clinical right away. Moreover, Regis is unique in that students are encouraged to experience many concentrations of medicine before choosing a specialty. My experience as a clinical associate has taught me how important this is. The Regis NP program ensures that students will be happy in the path that they choose.
Regis Masters of Nursing Program is the ideal program for me for various reasons. Most importantly, it has many unique aspects that fit my personal learning style and professional goals. There are many interesting and unique volunteering opportunities, such as the Haiti Project and Rosie’s Place, which I hope to be involved in. Graduating from Regis College Nurse Practitioner Program will be a great foundation for my future volunteering endeavors overseas and career.
