Streaming media technology facilitates distribution of both real-time and demand-driven delivery or presentation of various multimedia contents including video and audio through the internet or a unique service provider. Streaming media presentation has become an integral part of networking experience for individual and enterprise users. Quality video content delivery through the network is a powerful tool adopted by organizations at the workplace nowadays. Apart from its entertainment value of taking video contents to the personal computers and mobile phones, the live video streaming technology has made organizations busy enhancing their workplace productivity by adopting the state-of-the-art technology (Bourque, 2014). Smart organizations have started building their own sharing platforms to share certain best practices towards streamlining their work processes. As a marketing and training tool, the value proposition of streaming technology is matchless.
Basically, the streaming media technology relies on independent components including the software that plays the media file in the user’s device, a compression technology that manages the size of audio and video files, and a server that distributes the streams that often involves the service of multiple vendors (Ozer, 2011). Therefore, a new technology developed by a streaming vendor need not necessarily support an existing or new playback platform of another vendor. At the same time, the wide range of end-devices currently in use including low-power mobile phones, sophisticated computers and HD televisions make it mandatory for streaming producers to customize the streams for delivering through very-slow to very-high speed networks. This warrants the streaming technology to change unendingly to ensure better integration with the newly designed end devices. Thus, it is high time streaming media trends are consolidated to provide uninterrupted service to users, both corporate and individual. Integrating all the unit components under a single umbrella or vendor would be a feasible solution that promotes a healthy competition between vendors providing complete streaming solutions.
