The results of the performance figures of Mid-City Hotel on a per quarter basis, as compared to the industry average are summarized in the table below:
It can be deduced from the tabular presentation that there strengths were in the aspect of employee benefits from the first to the 5th quarter; decreases in absenteeism rates from the 2nd to the 3rd quarter; decreases in turnover rates; increases in morale; decreases in grievances; decreases in accident rates; increases in productivity; as well as decreases in labor cost per unit for the 2nd and 3rd quarters. There were consistent strengths in employee benefits which means that Mid-City Hotel provides greater benefits to the employees, as compared to other organizations in the same sector. Likewise, the ability to motivate employees through according exemplary benefits contributed to lower turnover rates, increases in morale, as well as decreases in the rates of reported grievances during the period. Likewise, it could also be seen that accident rate has been improving as indicated from the decline in accidents being reported, with the greatest improvement being manifested in the 6th quarter.
However, the summarized results have exhibited weaknesses in the following aspects: female composition of the workforce which was consistently lower than the industry average for all of the six quarters; as well as the composition of minorities in the organization, as compared to the industry average – also for all of the six quarters. In addition, the following areas were evident weaknesses:
As shown, the rate of absenteeism for the 1st, 4th, 5th and 6th quarters increased, as compared to the industry average. This is a manifestation of some problem being experienced by the employees (either personal, professional, family-related, or health problems) which cause the increase in rates of absenteeism. Likewise, turnover rate only increased in the first quarter, as compared to the industry average. This means that there were greater movements of employees opting to resign and causing the turnover rate to increase.
As could be observed, the morale decreased by 2, as compared to the industry average. This coincided with the high turnover rate. It could therefore be interpreted that during the first quarter, the low morale exhibited and felt by the staff led to their decision to leave the organization, which caused the increase in turnover rate. In addition, the number of grievances increased for the first and the third quarter, as compared to industry averages which could be considered a weakness since some evident complaints from the employees could have led to increase in grievances.
In addition, the quality was consistently inferior with an average of -1.33 for the six quarters. Although not significantly deviant from the industry average, it is still an evident weakness. Finally, labor cost per unit is also above the industry average. This means that the organization incurs higher labor cost, as compared to other competitors within the industry.
Overall, it was shown that during the first quarter, there were more weaknesses that were noted for Mid-City Hotel, as compared to the industry average in almost 10 of the standards of performance. At the end of the 6th quarter, the number of strengths are almost the same with the number of weaknesses. This means that Mid-City Hotel is working to improve their overall performance on an industry-based standard. With the detailed weaknesses noted, the organization should focus on these facets to gain core competence and advantage in their field of endeavor. The organization should employ more females and minorities, improve on their quality of service, and focus on cost minimization to optimize results.
